I am intrigued by the text revolution. Suffice it to say that I am fascinated by the technology. I love the whole thing. The short codes really pique my interest. So I decided to write an article on this, but soon after starting the research, my goal took a turn. Having spent many hours passing idle time sending text messages to short codes has allowed me to entertain hours of boredom in my life.

Initially I had intended to provided a listing of short codes that you, my reader, could use for those moments in your life when you are bored, or have a few minutes to waste. A list that would provide some entertainment to an otherwise boring wait. I know, we all have those moments. Then I found this list:

I knew, but had not fully comprehended the availability of information on any particular topic such as SMS messaging. I knew, from personal experience, that a web site could be used to send text messages to cell phones, for free. And if you have read any of my other articles, you know I am a huge proponent of FREE. I also knew there were probably more than a couple of sites, but I had no idea?.So I list here, for your convenience, a few of the more common and easy sites on which you can send text messages to any mobile phone (that is SMS equipped of course) meeting my extensive criteria. That being FREE!

Probably my favorite not only because they offer straightforward FREE text to any cell phone, they allow you to enter your email address so that you can receive replies. That?s very cool. In addition, they also offer for download a Vista gadget that allows you to text any cell phone right from your desktop! But wait, there?s more! You can place some HTML code on your web site (or your social web site ? MySpace, Facebook, Hi5, etc) which allows visitors to your page to send YOU a text message ? RIGHT FROM YOUR OWN PAGE!

GizmoSMS

GizmoSMS offers a no frills SMS interface with a premium offering, but the basic text service is free. And simple.

Peekamo

Peekamo, another free offering, allows for basic SMS, but boasts an advances feature set such as phone number masking, SMS Archival, Mobile Social Networking, Contact Management, and Micro-blogging.

Of less amazement are the corporate sites:

Send text messages to Verizon customers. Verizon

Verizon offers a service whereas you may email xxx-xxx-xxxx@vtext.com to send to the Verizon users mobile via an email message.

The following two sites are ?world-friendly.? That is, allow for sending to countries other than your own. And don?t forget, sending text messages from your phone to international numbers costs extra, even if you have an unlimited text package.
