MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Kraft Food's restructuring will keep Oscar Mayer based in Madison.
Kraft plans to cut 1,600 positions in North America and consolidate offices as it prepares to split its business into two independent companies. Kraft says fewer than 15 people in Madison will lose their jobs. Company spokesman Mike Mitchell says none of the job losses will affect Madison factory workers.
Jenn Post Tyler, from the economic development group Thrive, tells the State Journal (http://bit.ly/xX4s3g ) that keeping Oscar Mayer in Madison is a vote of confidence that signals to other businesses and entrepreneurs.
Kraft announced last August that it would split into two companies -- a global snacks business and North American grocery business.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports Kraft Foods will eliminate 1,600 jobs within the next 12 months, about 40 percent in its North American sales operations.
The following statement was released by Madison Mayor Paul Soglin:
With the announcement today that Kraft Foods will be closing facilities in New York and New Jersey and the loss of 1,600 jobs, comes the news that the Madison management center will remain open.
Madison Mayor Paul Soglin said, ?The news that Madison will continue to be home to Oscar Mayer is certainly in part because of the excellent work done in Madison and I congratulate President Nick Meriggioli and everyone concerned. Although I understand there will be the loss of 12 jobs in Madison, the news could have been much worse and in fact devastating.?
?Oscar Mayer has been a great corporate citizen for decades. I have worked with them over the years and was pleased to do a site visit to the plant recently. The city looks forward to continuing to work with Oscar Mayor leaders and workers,? continued Soglin. ?The news of this company reorganization and resulting job losses is a good reminder for all of us not to take our friends for granted. Over 100 years ago Oscar Mayer recognized that Madison is a great place to establish a business and we look forward to his namesake company remaining in the city for years to come.?
Company officials announced today that they are realigning the grocery and snacks businesses, resulting in the consolidation of management locations. The Madison management center though will remain the site for the Oscar Mayer business unit.
