Relationship breakdown and how it can affect us. : I want my ex back

You are here: Home / Communication / Relationship breakdown and how it can affect us.

When problems arise in many relationships it can often be as a result of poor communication between the couple. In order to better communicate our wants and needs to our partner, we first need a healthy sense of our own identity.

For any relationship to be successful it will be dependent upon the two individuals within the relationship both having a strong sense of self, and clearly defined, personal boundaries. When we have an appreciation of our own self worth, it allows us to both see, and value them in another person, and can increase our ability for intimacy and commitment.

Simply by increasing our own understanding of who we are and how we have developed as a person, makes us better able to cope with life?s trials. This balance, and also learning practical skills in communication and problem solving, can lead to having a more harmonious relationship, and to personal fulfillment.

There are a few simple strategies that are worth following if we want to have good communication with our partner. Always be clear what it is that you want to communicate to your partner. If you can?t articulate the point to yourself, then you won?t be able to explain to them either. If discussing things which are bothering you, then use ?I? statements, to explain the problem rather than making it personal and making the problem be about your partner.

When discussing issues, make sure to choose a time when you have their attention, and there are likely to be no distractions. When you have had your say, you need to take time to listen to what your partner is saying and resist the temptation to interrupt. Try not to let emotions cloud the issue, and try to keep the discussion calm, this way you stand a better chance of resolving the issues that are causing you problems.

Effects of relationship breakdown

People who have a relationship breakdown are more likely to suffer from mental health problems (such as anxiety or depression). There is also an increased likelihood of poor physical health, and reduced productivity at work. If there are children involved in the relationship, they will also be affected by whatever is happening in the household. Keeping things civil makes life easier for them and you both.

Relationships which breakdown are different financially than they would be if you were legally married. For this reason it can be a good idea to enter into a formal cohabitation agreement with your partner. This will define both of your rights and responsibilities in the event that your relationship breaks down. This will be fair to both of you, particularly if either of you own property in your own name that you acquired without the assistance of your partner.

The greatest misconception regarding common law partnerships is how it is defined. Many people seem to think that you are ?common law married? after only one year of cohabitation. The reality is that where you live in the world determines to what extent your ?common law marriage? will be recognized. Here are links to more articles about this subject for USA, Canada, UK

It should always be remembered that it is much easier to solve problems in a relationship at an early stage, rather than waiting until you have broken up. So whatever else happens in your relationship, make sure that you work on your communication skills. This should make your relationship more harmonious, and let problems get solved before they become a major issue.
