New Treatment For Brain Cancer Tested At Ohio State | WBNS-10TV ...

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? A study was published Monday on a new treatment for brain cancer that was tested at The Ohio State University Medical Center Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Researchers used a Trojan horse technique to help the body's immune system destroy cancer cells, 10TV's Andrea Cambern reported Monday.

Dr. Antonio Chiocca said they slipped a herpes virus into the cancer cells. The virus made a gene which activates a drug that doctors give patients.

"It revs up your own immune cells and recognizes this cancer all of a sudden as foreign," Chiocca said."It converts a drug that we give patients after the gene therapy, into an active drug."

When doctors combined the treatment with radiation, the body's immune system was boosted to destroy the cancer. Doctors said the treatment is safe, and they believe it is effective.

The study was being published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
