Watch out, New Yorkers and Northeasterners: Hurricane Irene is forecast to come uncomfortably close to New York City this weekend.
Skip to next paragraphNew Yorkers may think Manhattan is the center of the universe, but it's the edge of the Atlantic's hurricane alley. As history shows, hurricanes can and do storm through the metropolitan area and landfall here is not out of the question. With such a densely populated city, a citywide evacuation is nearly impossible (the subways can barely handle rush hour when it rains).
Do you know what to do if Irene hits? It's a good idea to make a plan now, since Irene is a real threat to strike New York City, officials say. [Related: Could New York Handle a Hurricane?]
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is taking the threat seriously, and at a press briefing yesterday (Aug. 27) he urged people to stay alert.
"Everyone should keep an eye on the storm and pay attention to the Office of Emergency Management [OEM] when they put out some advisories on what we should prepare for as we get closer to the potential storm," Bloomberg said.
The latest forecast has a lot of wiggle room on the storm's northeastern path, but the storm could come near New York City Sunday evening (Aug. 28), according to the National Hurricane Center.
"There's a potential for it, but it's a little too soon to tell," said Dennis Feltgen of the National Hurricane Center.
Historic hurricanes
Since records have been kept in the 1700s, dozens of hurricanes have passed through the greater New York City area, including a few major hurricanes.
On Sept. 3, 1821, a major hurricane slammed without warning into Manhattan, flooding everything south of Canal Street, according to historical accounts. The East River and the Hudson River converged over Lower Manhattan, but that part of the island had not yet been built up. Had the storm hit at high tide, the flooding would have been far worse, researchers say.
The benchmark by which all New York hurricane fears are measured is the so-called Long Island Express. Late in the summer of 1938, a storm that started off the coast of Africa arrived unexpectedly along the coast of New Jersey, where 140 mph (225 kph) winds tore up boardwalks. The storm raced north at more than 50 mph and uprooted trees and destroyed houses on Long Island. A U.S. Coast Guard station on Long Island measured a minimum pressure of 27.94 inches. Storm surges of 10 to 12 feet inundated portions of the coast from Long Island and Connecticut eastward to southeastern Massachusetts.
The 1938 storm showed just how dangerous storm surge can be in a bay. In Rhode Island, at the head of Narragansett Bay 30 miles from the Atlantic, the city of Providence awaited a fate its inhabitants could not have imagined. As the hurricane barreled toward the city, it pushed a surge of water up the bay. As the channel narrowed and became more shallow, the storm surge had nowhere to go but up. The mountain of water carried boats and houses into the capital, flooding the first floor of buildings in downtown, where workers were just preparing to go home.
The storm moved so quickly northward from North Carolina that it caught everyone by surprise. Since no warnings were issued, people fled only when they saw the storm approaching, and an estimated 682 to 800 people were killed, according to "Sudden Sea: The Great Hurricane of 1938" (Back Bay, 2004).
More recently, Hurricane Carol made landfall as a Category 3 storm on Long Island and Connecticut in 1954. In 1960, Hurricane Donna created an 11-foot (3.4-meter) storm surge in New York Harbor, causing extensive pier damage, according to the New York City Office of Emergency Management.
Hurricane Gloria in 1985 would have been "catastrophic" if it had hit at high tide and been just slightly closer to the city. As it was, it did several hundred million dollars' worth of damage, washing away piers and docks and destroying a few homes on the ocean-facing side of the island. There have been several other near-misses in the past six decades.
It's hard to say if Hurricane Irene will smack New York City, but history suggests it is only a matter of time before a major hurricane makes a direct hit. [Related: Which US Cities Are Most Vulnerable to Hurricanes?]
Escape plan
Even if Hurricane Irene doesn't hit NYC directly, flooding and strong winds are still possible. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast 12 inches (30 centimeters) of rain for New York City over the next five days.
"A major hurricane could push more than 30 feet [9 m] of storm surge into some parts of New York City," according to the Office of Emergency Management.
The OEM has set up evacuation zones throughout the city to shelter people who live within 10 blocks of the coast. (Click here to find out if you live in a hurricane evacuation zone.)
People who live in high-rise buildings should be ready to move to the 10th floor or below if winds become strong enough, the OEM says.
Feltgen, of the National Hurricane Center, said now is not too soon to take the hurricane threat seriously. People should be less worried about the exact path, he said, and be ready to deal with whatever Irene may bring.
"What they need to be concerned with is the possible impact of a hurricane ? the key word being possible ? and make sure they have their hurricane supplies," Feltgen told OurAmazingPlanet.

He's a self-proclaimed "f---in' walkin' paradox," and in 2011, contradiction is the new "keeping it real," as Tyler, the Creator proved each time he opened his mouth -- whether to rap or eat a cockroach. Much like his music, Tyler's breakout video for "Yonkers" was as shocking as it was artistic, earning him VMA noms for Best New Artist and Video of the Year.
"I'm really excited, shout-out to Ron Artest. If I lose to any of those wackass videos, I'm gonna be mad because they all suck -- except for Adele's," Tyler told MTV News of his nomination in July.
Tyler himself directed the black-and-white clip for "Yonkers" under the alias Wolf Haley. The song's rhyme couplets are as striking as the images. The rebel rapper basically told Christ to grow a pair when he spit, "Jesus called, he said he's sick of the disses/ I told him to quit bitchin', this isn't a f---in' hot line." It is rabblerousing like this that propelled Tyler and his crew of hip-hop misfits Odd Future to the forefront of rap's conversation this year. The actual art seemingly took a backseat with critics.
It all erupted in 2009 when Tyler released his free digital album, Bastard. The online fanfare would spill over, shining a light on Creator's group as well: Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All. In addition to Tyler, there is the exiled Earl, Hodgy Beats, Left Brain, Domo Genesis, Mike G and R&B fire-starter Frank Ocean, among others.
By the time Tyler and the group performed the single "Sandwitches" with the Roots on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" in February, the hype began to spill over, and seemingly everyone was talking about the rapping kid who decorated his stage with gnomes and wore a green ski mask on national television.
Simple yet effective, the "Yonkers" video -- which has racked up more than 18 million views on YouTube -- starts with the rapper seated on a stool, rapping the song's lyrics while playing with a large cockroach, which he later throws up. A visibly disturbed Tyler continues to spit the track's second verse, stripping off his shirt then putting his neck in a noose. In the video's shocking ending, the MC stands up on the chair and kicks the stool from under his feet as his legs dangle in a simulated suicide. "Damn, I'm Looking At The Video Treatment I wrote In This Blackberry Back In Jan. F---!" Tyler tweeted after he learned of the nomination.
For someone who notoriously bucks critics and mainstream music outlets, snagging a Moonman is pretty high on Tyler, the Creator's to-do list. Then again he is a "f---in' walkin' paradox."

RABAT ? Barbary fig oil, celebrated as an effective anti-ageing skin potion, is following argan oil as a great new cosmetic export from Morocco.
But the tiny amount of oil extracted from each cactus fruit makes Barbary fig oil the most expensive on the market, about a 1,000 euros ($1,440) a litre.
Beyond its cosmetic virtues, the United Nations is urging Morocco to develop the cactus plant in a country where 80 percent of farming is carried out in arid or semi-arid regions.
The push to develop Barbary fig, a cactus fruit well-adapted to extreme weather conditions, comes with a belief that several revenue streams could stem from it.
If successful, the cactus could stand as a business model to other countries looking for cash crops suitable to inhospitably hot climates.
Eight tonnes of the Barbary fig fruit ? sometimes known as prickly pear ? are needed to produce a litre (quart) of oil used for cosmetics, said Karim Anegay, head of the cactus programme at the economic promotion office for southern Morocco.
?This oil is commercialised by Moroccan companies as its anti-ageing virtues are of excellent quality but it?s still early days,? he said.
In Casablanca, cosmetics company Azabane uses Barbary fig oil in shampoo and creams.
Redouane Stouti, a 27-year-old entrepreneur, owns a farm in the Errhamana region, where he produces 10 litres a month from his vast plantation.
?With the help of a machine, the fruit seeds are pressed as is,? he said.
?I have 20 points of sale in Morocco under the ?Coeur de Figue? appellation,? he said as he toured a series of alleys where about 30 women were picking the thorny fruit.
Researcher Mohamed Boujnah said the oil was ?rich in Vitamin E with a great anti-oxidant power?.
Sofia, a 50-year-old customer, said the oil was ?wonderful?.
?Ever since I?ve used it I?ve seen an improvement and elasticity in my skin,? she said.
In the Gulemim and Sidi Ifni regions, both extremely arid, Morocco began an ambitious programme to increase cactus production.
The UN Development Programme (UNDP) contributed $1.7 million to the program and provided technical assistance, said El Kebir Alaouoi M?Daghri, the programme director.
Annual production of Barbary fig fruit in Morocco is 1.2 million tonnes from 150,000 hectares (370,000 acres) of plantations, mostly in southern regions.
Originally imported from the Americas in the 16th century, the cactus and its fruit are used traditionally, often as food. Orangish-red when ripe, the fruit?s juicy insides taste something like a very sweet watermelon.
UN experts say the fruit can even be used as sustenance during famines.
In southern regions, ?conventional farming can no longer provide added value and that is why we have found cactus cultivation as an alternative,? M?Daghri said.
The Sidi Ifni province recently held a festival to promote the cactus fruit, and the UN-backed program is currently building installations to improve production of Morocco?s latest agricultural initiative.

Crisp, acid-tongued and sharply acted, it's the sort of exercise in tangy Celtic cynicism that's become one of the Emerald Isle's most reliable imports.
There are few things finer in cinema than Brendan Gleeson's fat, happy face.
McDonagh's script is agile, darting between the ridiculous, the sage and the surprisingly sentimental. His love of language and the absurd has hints of the wisecracking Quentin Tarantino. But the story is decidedly more rooted in Ireland's loamy turf.
"The Guard" is not the most original buddy-cop movie you'll see, but it well may be one of the most entertaining.
"The Guard" himself may be no angel, but his movie is a wee slice of heaven.
The Guard is certainly good for a laugh or two, but those that are claiming it to be funnier than In Bruges are claiming things that aren't true.
Gleeson's Boyle constantly wrong-foots those around him. He has no time for political correctness, yet it's his mealy-mouthed PC-Plod colleagues who are the real racists ... McDonagh's film shares his jaunty irreverance.
Great fun when taken in the right spirit, which would be Old Paddy with a Guinness chaser.
We are never in doubt that it's a comedy, but there are some fairly serious matters and a surprising amount of dramatic action

Like bacon, Brendan Gleeson makes everything taste better.
The Guard, like its unconventional hero, is a true original.
Spiteful, ironic and human in turn, The Guard is an entertainment that makes most of the year's American comedies look impoverished, and in Gleeson it has a palpable star.
"The Guard" is violent, profane and funny.
The reasons it's worth seeing are Gleeson's impish performance and the sparkling dialogue, which marries Irish blarney to Tarantino-lite philiosophising.
There is something smug and roguish-by-rote about the usual Gleeson performance. Yet who else could play this protagonist?
The always-unbeatable Gleeson is on simply outstanding form, conjuring a character both dignified and ridiculous, heroic and hardly bothered.
Assured and well-written, it may totter uncertainly in the third act but it's a pleasure to listen to a script with such an ear for shocking insult and knowing offence.
Offering shades of Sidney Poitier's In The Heat of the Night, The Guard is a good character study with an above average script.

The report's findings will be useful to all stakeholders involved in vaccine compensation decisions, including VICP staff, people filing claims, special masters that rule on vaccine cases, and others.
Convincing evidence shows that the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine can lead to fever-triggered seizures in some individuals, although these effects are almost always without long-term consequences, the report says. The MMR vaccine also can produce a rare form of brain inflammation in some people with severe immune system deficiencies. In a minority of patients, the varicella vaccine against chickenpox can induce brain swelling, pneumonia, hepatitis, meningitis, shingles, and chickenpox in immunocompromised patients as well as some who apparently have competent immune function, the committee found. The majority of these problems have occurred in individuals with immunodeficiencies, which increase individuals' susceptibility to the live viruses used in MMR and varicella. Six vaccines -- MMR, varicella, influenza, hepatitis B, meningococcal, and the tetanus-containing vaccines -- can trigger anaphylaxis, an allergic reaction that appears shortly after injection. And, in general, the injection of vaccines can trigger fainting and inflammation of the shoulder, the committee noted.
The evidence suggests that certain vaccines can lead to four other adverse effects, although the data on these links are not as convincing, the report says. The MMR vaccine appears to trigger short-term joint pain in some women and children. Some people can experience anaphylaxis after receiving the HPV vaccine. And certain influenza vaccines used abroad have resulted in a mild, temporary oculo-respiratory syndrome characterized by conjunctivitis, facial swelling, and mild respiratory symptoms.
The committee's review also concluded that certain vaccines are not linked to four specific conditions. The MMR vaccine and diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis (DTaP) do not cause Type 1 diabetes, and the MMR vaccine does not cause autism, according to the results of several studies. The evidence shows that the flu shot does not cause Bell's palsy or exacerbate asthma. Suggestions that vaccines can lead to these serious health problems have contributed to parental concerns about immunization for their children.
Establishing a cause-and-effect relationship between an agent and a health outcome requires solid evidence. The committee's conclusions are based on the strengths and weaknesses of several types of evidence, including biological, clinical, and epidemiological research. In many cases of suggested vaccine-related adverse outcomes, there is too little evidence, or the available evidence offers conflicting results or is otherwise inadequate to draw conclusions.
"With the start of the new school year, it's time to ensure that children are up to date on their immunizations, making this report's findings about the safety of these eight vaccines particularly timely," said committee chair Ellen Wright Clayton, professor of pediatrics and law, and director, Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn. "The findings should be reassuring to parents that few health problems are clearly connected to immunizations, and these effects occur relatively rarely. And repeated study has made clear that some health problems are not caused by vaccines."
In accordance with its charge, the committee focused solely on findings about potential risks of immunizations. It did not examine information that would have allowed it to draw conclusions about the ratio of benefits to risks. However, the committee members noted that deaths and disability due to infectious diseases have been dramatically reduced over the last century since the majority of vaccines were developed and brought into widespread use.
