Risks of Primary Extracolonic Cancers Following Colorectal Cancer in

Risks of Primary Extracolonic Cancers Following Colorectal Cancer in Lynch Syndrome:

Background
Lynch syndrome is a highly penetrant cancer predisposition syndrome caused by germline mutations in DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes. We estimated the risks of primary cancers other than colorectal cancer following a diagnosis of colorectal cancer in mutation carriers.

Methods
We obtained data from the Colon Cancer Family Registry for 764 carriers of an MMR gene mutation (316 MLH1, 357 MSH2, 49 MSH6, and 42 PMS2), who had a previous diagnosis of colorectal cancer. The Kaplan?Meier method was used to estimate their cumulative risk of cancers 10 and 20 years after colorectal cancer. We estimated the age-, sex-, country- and calendar period?specific standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) of cancers following colorectal cancer, compared with the general population.

Results
Following colorectal cancer, carriers of MMR gene mutations had the following 10-year risk of cancers in other organs: kidney, renal pelvis, ureter, and bladder (2%, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1% to 3%); small intestine, stomach, and hepatobiliary tract (1%, 95% CI = 0.2% to 2%); prostate (3%, 95% CI = 1% to 5%); endometrium (12%, 95% CI = 8% to 17%); breast (2%, 95% CI = 1% to 4%); and ovary (1%, 95% CI = 0% to 2%). They were at elevated risk compared with the general population: cancers of the kidney, renal pelvis, and ureter (SIR = 12.54, 95% CI = 7.97 to 17.94), urinary bladder (SIR = 7.22, 95% CI = 4.08 to 10.99), small intestine (SIR = 72.68, 95% CI = 39.95 to 111.29), stomach (SIR = 5.65, 95% CI = 2.32 to 9.69), and hepatobiliary tract (SIR = 5.94, 95% CI = 1.81 to 10.94) for both sexes; cancer of the prostate (SIR = 2.05, 95% CI = 1.23 to 3.01), endometrium (SIR = 40.23, 95% CI = 27.91 to 56.06), breast (SIR = 1.76, 95% CI = 1.07 to 2.59), and ovary (SIR = 4.19, 95% CI = 1.28 to 7.97).

Conclusion

Carriers of MMR gene mutations who have already had a colorectal cancer are at increased risk of a greater range of cancers than the recognized spectrum of Lynch syndrome cancers, including breast and prostate cancers.

'Weird chemistry' by microbe is prime source of ocean methane

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Up to 4 percent of the methane on Earth comes from the ocean's oxygen-rich waters, but scientists have been unable to identify the source of this potent greenhouse gas. Now researchers report that they have found the culprit: a bit of "weird chemistry" practiced by the most abundant microbes on the planet.

The findings appear in the journal Science.

The researchers who made the discovery did not set out to explain ocean geochemistry. They were searching for new antibiotics. Their research, funded by the National Institutes of Health, explores an unusual class of potential antibiotic agents, called phosphonates, already in use in agriculture and medicine.

Many microbes produce phosphonates to thwart their competitors. Phosphonates mimic molecules the microbes use, but tend to be more resistant to enzymatic breakdown. The secret of their success is the durability of their carbon-phosphorus bond.

"We're looking at all kinds of antibiotics that have this carbon-phosphorus bond," said University of Illinois microbiology and Institute for Genomic Biology (IGB) professor William Metcalf, who led the study with chemistry and IGB professor Wilfred van der Donk. "So we found genes in a microbe that we thought would make an antibiotic. They didn't. They made something different altogether."

The microbe was Nitrosopumilus maritimus, one of the most abundant organisms on the planet and a resident of the oxygen-rich regions of the open ocean. When scanning microbial genomes for promising leads, Benjamin Griffin, a postdoctoral researcher in Metcalf's lab, noticed that N. maritimus had a gene for an enzyme that resembled other enzymes involved in phosphonate biosynthesis. He saw that the microbe also contained genes to make a molecule, called HEP, which is an intermediate in phosphonate biosynthesis.

To determine whether N. maritimus was actually producing a desirable phosphonate antibiotic, chemistry postdoctoral researcher Robert Cicchillo cloned the gene for the mysterious enzyme, expressed it in a bacterium (E. coli), and ramped up production of the enzyme. When the researchers added HEP to the enzyme, the chemical reaction that ensued produced a long sought-after compound, one that could explain the origin of methane in the aerobic ocean.

Scientists had been searching for this compound, methylphosphonic acid, since 2008, when David Karl at the University of Hawaii, Edward DeLong at MIT and their colleagues published an elegant -- yet unproven -- hypothesis to explain how methane was arising in the aerobic ocean. The only microbes known to produce methane are anaerobes, unable to tolerate oxygen. And yet the aerobic ocean is saturated with methane.

To explain this "methane paradox," Karl and DeLong noted that many aerobic marine microbes host an enzyme that can cleave the carbon-phosphorus bond. If that bond were embedded in a molecule with a single carbon atom, methylphosphonic acid, one of the byproducts of this cleavage would be methane. Karl and DeLong even showed that incubation of seawater microbes with methylphosphonic acid led to methane production.

"There was just one problem with this theory," van der Donk said. "Methylphosphonic acid has never been detected in marine ecosystems. And based on known chemical pathways, it was difficult to see how this compound could be made without invoking unusual biochemistry."

Van der Donk's lab conducted further experiments that demonstrated that the N. maritimus was actually synthesizing phosphonic acids.

"The chemical analysis was a Herculean effort," Metcalf said. The microbe is "one-tenth the size of the standard lab rat microbe, E. coli, and grows at much lower cell densities," he said. The team relied on N. maritimus discoverer David Stahl, of the University of Washington, to grow the microbe in culture for their analysis.

"So we grew 100 liters of culture to get a few, maybe 50 or 100 milligrams of cells, of which maybe 1 percent is phosphorus, of which maybe 5 percent is methylphosphonate," Metcalf said.

The experiments indicated that the methylphosphonate was bound to another molecule, likely a sugar attached to the microbe's surface, van der Donk said. When N. maritimus dies, other marine microbes break the carbon-phosphorus bond of the methylphosphonate to gobble up the phosphorus, an element that is rare in the oceans but essential to life. This encounter generates methane.

The biochemistry that allows N. maritimus to produce methylphosphonate is "unprecedented," Metcalf said.

"Organisms that make phosphonates tend to use weird chemistry for all kinds of things," van der Donk said. "But this is very unusual. One of the carbon atoms of the HEP is oxidized by four electrons and the other is turned into a methyl group. I'm not aware of any other cases where that happens."

The new findings will help those modeling the geochemistry of the ocean to understand climate change, Metcalf said.

"We know that about 20 percent of the greenhouse effect comes from methane and 4 percent of that comes from this previously unexplained source," he said. "You have to know where the methane comes from and where it goes to understand what will happen when the system changes."

    North India receives rains

Parts of North India on Thursday received moderate to heavy rainfall which left some cities water-logged.

Capital Delhi recorded a maximum of 30.8 degrees celsius, three less than normal and a minimum of 24.3 degrees celsius, two degrees less than the usual.

A total of 14.4 mm rain was received in the city in the past 24 hours.

Rains also lashed parts of Haryana and Punjab today.

In Chandigarh, 30 minutes of heavy rain left roads in the city flooded triggering traffic jams at some places.

Rains slowed down the pace of vehicular traffic as motorists had to negotiate through the sharp showers while several riding two-wheelers were forced to take cover under bus shelters or trees.

The downpour led to water accumulating in low-lying areas and causing traffic snarls on many roads including the city's Madhya Marg.

After poor rains in July after its onset, the monsoon has been in vigorous mode in most parts of the two states and Chandigarh during the past three weeks.

In Himachal Pradesh, Revenue Minister Gulab Singh informed the state Assembly that at least 26 people died due to heavy rains and cloudbursts in Himachal Pradesh during the current monsoon.

He said that 1,892 houses were damaged after the onset of monsoon and the loss to public and private property had been assessed at Rs 896.02 crore.

The loss to horticulture and agriculture crops was assessed at Rs 300 crore while infrastructure like roads and bridges suffered loss to the tune of Rs 280 crore.

Judge to lift restrictions on Florida voter registration

MIAMI (Reuters) - A judge said on Wednesday he would issue a permanent injunction against controversial restrictions on voter registration drives in Florida put in place under a new state election law backed by the state's governor.

U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle temporarily prohibited Florida in May from enforcing parts of the law that tightened deadlines for groups conducting voter registration drives to submit registration forms.

In a ruling on Wednesday, Hinkle said he would grant a permanent injunction against the law's provisions if the case is not appealed to a higher court. The state of Florida and civic groups have agreed not to appeal the ruling.

The case is among several legal battles over voting laws that have played out in Florida, which is expected to be a key swing state in November's presidential election.

The law has been challenged by civic and voting rights groups, including the League of Women Voters and Rock the Vote.

"This order is a decisive victory for Florida voters," Lee Rowland, a lawyer for the Brennan Center for Justice, a plaintiff in the case, said in a statement.

"The Florida legislature has tried repeatedly to stifle access to voter registration opportunities, and once again a federal court has stopped them in their tracks."

Backers of the law, which was passed last year by Florida's Republican-controlled Legislature and signed by Republican Governor Rick Scott, say it is intended to fight voter fraud.

Critics have said the law's effect would be to suppress registration of voters likely to vote Democratic.

It was part of a wave of what critics called "voter suppression laws" backed by Republicans and enacted in 15 states last year.

The Florida law imposed a $1,000-a-day fine on groups that fail to give election authorities the registration forms within 48 hours after voters filled them out. Voter registration groups previously had 10 days to submit the forms.

The League of Women Voters said the requirement forced it to stop holding drives in Florida after doing them for 72 years.

DNA Results and what you can do with them - Digital Scrapbook Place

I made this LO over 2 years ago.

At that time, I had two problems: My father was dead, and my cousins both had sons and were reluctant to do a DNA test. 2) My family-tree family is Amish and I didn't think they'd be too keen on a DNA test, either, and would probably refuse, so there would be nothing to match to.

My family tree has always been know...like you know what color your eyes are, it's always just been there. So I started researching 4th cousins, which was pathetically easy due to an unusual surname and the fact that as I had always known where i came from, so did they.

I *finally* found a fourth cousin who would submit a DNA sample, and was astonished to find the AMISH side had already submitted one years before! I bought one more test for a known individual who was a 6th cousin of mine as a control, and then another 7th cousin added his to the group.

I was definitely able to tie into a well researched (on paper) family back to 1308 with DNA. Now with new technology in the DNA field, we are going back to the 800s, and maybe earlier.

So with DNA, you don't need a brother, uncle or father. You can use a distant cousin you find in your paper trail.

This is not Family Finder, it's a straight 111 marker test (which only two people need to buy - the rest can tag on with 37 or 67 markers tests) Any extra SNPs can be done simply with one person's results and everybody gets the benefit.

Hyundai Starting to Hog the U.S. Automotive Road | InvestorPlace

    ? ?

    Popular Posts:

    Recent Posts:

I can remember back in the late-1980s when driving a Hyundai was the epitome of un-cool. Well, things have certainly changed since then. Now, Hyundai?s are known for their style, quality, and affordability ? and even for being, dare I say it, ?cool.?

This is a development not lost on U.S. auto giants Ford (NYSE:F) and General Motors (NYSE:GM), or on the Japanese automakers Honda (NYSE:HMC) and Toyota (NYSE:TM). Even German behemoth Volkswagen AG (PINK:VLKAY) is likely watching Hyundai?s remarkable progress, and well it should.

Through the first half of 2012, Hyundai Group?s U.S. market share ? which includes Kia-brand vehicles ? held steady vs. the prior year?s six months. The company captured 8.87% of the market midway through 2012, down slightly from the 8.97% it garnered through the first six months of 2011. By comparison, the much larger Ford and GM saw their respective market share fall in the first half of the year, with Ford?s share sliding 1.21% to 15.68%, and GM?s share declining 1.83% to 18.09%. Hyundai also bested rival Nissan (PINK:NSANY) in market share, as well as Volkswagen.

Earlier this year, John Krafcik, chief executive officer of Hyundai Motor America, announced that the company aims to increase its U.S. sales to 700,000 cars and sport-utility vehicles this year, which is a roughly 8% increase over the prior year. The only thing holding Hyundai back is the fact that its production facilities at the time were already running near full capacity. And while the company is reportedly contemplating adding more production facilities, a decline in demand from buyers in Europe has allowed Hyundai to ship some inventory originally intended for Europe back to the U.S.

To be certain, things haven?t been all roses for Hyundai, especially recently. The company?s exports stalled in July, down some 23% because of a labor dispute that has crippled production. According to the company, the total number of Hyundai and Kia vehicles made in July sank to 120,493, a big drop from the 156,200 units made in the previous month.

Here?s the money quote from the Hyundai statement as reported by the Wall Street Journal: ?U.S. dealerships for Hyundai and Kia had some difficulty meeting soaring demand due to a shortage of vehicles.? Moreover, the company said it had less than a month of inventory remaining as of Aug. 1. That?s well below the optimal inventory levels of 60 days.

The supply constraints caused by the strike in South Korean production facilities will likely take its toll on Hyundai and Kia sales, but whatever sales disruption takes place, it will likely be a mere bump in the road for the company. Once Hyundai settles the disputes and gets back on track with full production, the race with U.S., Japanese and German automakers will resume.

The long-term implications of Hyundai?s drive into the lead pack of top-selling automakers in the U.S. sales means an increasingly competitive marketplace for the likes of Ford and GM. It also means that to stay competitive, these companies likely will have to offer more discounts on more models, which will take an increasing bite out of profit margins.

To combat the loss of U.S. market share, Ford and particularly GM will have to search for market share outside the states. The only problem is that Europe is mired in recession, and the other big market, China, is having its own struggles with economic growth.

To be certain, the U.S. auto market is where it?s at for car makers, and any company making gains here at home is liable to cause an uncomfortable stir for those currently in the top spot. So, if you?re an investor in U.S. auto stocks, you better keep your eyes on the rearview mirror ? because Hyundai is catching up.

As of this writing, Jim Woods did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.

North Korea may be facing new food crisis: aid worker

BEIJING (Reuters) - North Korea could be heading towards a crisis similar to the 1990s when a million people are thought to have died after a series of natural disasters brought widespread famine, said an aid worker, just back from a tour of the impoverished state.

North Korea has suffered heavy floods this year, including from a typhoon earlier this week and another storm heading in its way, and has little capacity to deal with any more damage, said Kim Hartzner, managing director of Mission East, a Danish aid group which focuses on providing food aid to children.

"The scale and the magnitude of the disaster has been mind-blowing," he told Reuters in Beijing late on Wednesday, referring to flooding in late June and the end of July that killed at least 169, leaving some 400 people missing and 212,200 homeless.

"They've been through five or six consecutive disasters. It is a long-term problem and the supplies are likely to be very low," he said, adding there was a lack of even basic materials for rebuilding homes, such as concrete and iron bars.

"The damage to the arable land will not have an effect tomorrow or the day after; it will have an effect in two or three months. They can eat the maize they have already harvested," Hartzner added.

"But I think this will affect a sizable proportion of the maize. It is extremely serious if the maize and rice crops are damaged," he said, after returning from a six-day visit where he visited several areas hard-hit by the recent floods.

It was Hartzner's fourth trip to the country since last year when Mission East first gained access to North Korea.

A famine in the 1990s killed an estimated million people and North Korea has continued to endure chronic food shortages, which many experts say reflect systemic failings in the reclusive country's heavily centralized economic system, which has sapped farmers' productivity.

Since then, North Korea's agricultural sector has become increasingly vulnerable to floods and drought as a result of widespread deforestation.

While a United Nations official said earlier this month that the country was a long way from the famine levels seen in the 1990s, Hartzner said he was more worried.

"I think the chances are increasing that we're getting to a situation which could have similarities to the crisis in the 1990s. Definitely people are dying. How many is the big question which I simply cannot answer," he said.

Hartzner described conditions in three orphanages he visited in South Hwanghae province as awful.

"There the conditions are beyond comprehension; 70 percent of the children are suffering from acute malnutrition, either severely or moderately," he said.

U.N. and some other agencies say access to North Korea has improved during the most recent flooding, indicating the country wants to ease its traditional isolation at least temporarily.

Still, it remains one of the world's most reclusive states, even after young leader Kim Jong-un inherited dynastic power from his father Kim Jong-il, who died in December.

"I am very encouraged by their openness, by their willingness to share information," Hartzner said of his interaction with government officials. (Editing by Jonathan Thatcher)

Flake claims victory in Arizona Republican Senate primary

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Conservative U.S. Representative Jeff Flake claimed victory on Tuesday in a Republican primary election to pick a replacement for Jon Kyl, the U.S. Senator for Arizona who is stepping down at the end of the year.

Flake, the front runner by a wide margin in polls, announced he had beaten his feisty rival Wil Cardon as the Arizona Secretary of State's office reported Flake was 49 points ahead with 477 of 1,667 precincts reporting.

The six-term congressman now faces Democrat Richard Carmona, a former U.S. Surgeon General and decorated Vietnam War veteran originally from New York, to contest a seat that Republicans need if they are to have a chance to take control of the Senate in the November election.

"There couldn't be a starker difference between myself and our opponent in the general election ... Richard Carmona was handpicked by President (Barack) Obama to run here in Arizona," Flake told cheering supporters at his home in the east Phoenix Valley.

"We cannot allow someone who agrees lock, stock and barrel with the whole Obama agenda to become senator from Arizona. We've got to have an Arizonan who believes in limited government, economic freedom and individual responsibility," he said.

The U.S. Senate contest in Arizona is the highest-profile race among state primaries on Tuesday that include votes in Vermont and Alaska, as well as a runoff election in Oklahoma.

In Vermont, businessman John MacGovern overwhelmingly defeated challenger Brooke Paige to win the Republican primary for U.S. Senate. He will go up against heavily favored U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders in the general election.

Voters in Oklahoma picked Republican Markwayne Mullin, a plumbing company owner, over legislator George Faught by a comfortable margin in a U.S. House race.

Kyl, a senior party leader, announced in February he would not seek a fourth six-year term in office. Both he and Arizona's other U.S. senator, John McCain, endorsed Flake in the race, which started out fiery but cooled as successive polls gave him a widening lead.

Cardon, who oversees his family's portfolio of real estate investments, came out early with a costly advertising blitz casting Flake as a Washington insider who favored tax increases and was soft on illegal immigration. However, Cardon had reduced his spending in recent weeks.

Flake, 49, campaigned on what he said was a "proven track record" of voting to reduce the size of government and cutting taxes and spending.

Cardon, 41, spent nearly $8.8 million of his own money through the August 8 candidate-filing period in a bid to make his mark with voters as an outsider and businessman with experience.

A poll last Friday by the Western Representation political action committee had Flake leading Cardon by 64 to 16 percent.

Republicans already have a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives and must hold onto open seats such as Arizona's and gain four in other states to take control of the Senate.

In another hotly contested Arizona primary, two Republican incumbents went toe-to-toe in a battle for the chance to be on the ballot for a U.S. House seat in the November 6 general election.

Ben Quayle, son of former Vice President Dan Quayle, took on David Schweikert, in an expected tight contest brought about by the once-a-decade redistricting.

It is one of 11 such House contests between incumbents nationwide this year, and the result has yet to be called.

The Dangers of Joint Ownership | The Bonfrisco Law Firm Blog

Aug 29, 2012 ?/? By: Michael Bonfrisco, Estate Planning Attorney ?/? Category: Uncategorized

It?s an old cliche that a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. It is often true in estate planning. Here?s a common example. An elderly person of limited means has heard that his or her home will have to go through probate when he or she passes away unless it is transferred to someone else before the elderly person passes away. Thinking about how awful probate can be, the elderly person decides to transfer the home to the child. That is a gigantic mistake.

Once a home belongs to a child instead of the parent who lives in the home, then all sorts of bad things can happen. If the parent and child get in a disagreement, the child can evict the parent from the home. The child can sell the house. The child?s creditors can go after the house. The child might forget to pay property taxes.

There are much better ways to avoid probate. Trusts are the normal way, but an estate planning attorney can also present you with other options. Whatever you do, do not transfer your home to a child before consulting with an estate planning attorney. It might be the biggest mistake of your life.

The Bonfrisco Law Firm is a member of the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys.

Naked support for Prince Harry on Facebook

Whatever the royal family and his army superiors may think of his exploits in Las Vegas, many Britons can barely hide their support for Prince Harry, posting naked pictures of themselves on social media in honour of him.

A Facebook group entitled "Support Prince Harry with a naked salute!", featuring people posing in various states of undress saluting the third-in-line to the throne -- has won more than 12,000 members and is still growing.

The group sprang up after Harry, 27, was photographed naked after a game of "strip billiards" during a party in a VIP hotel suite in Las Vegas. The images, first published on a US website, rapidly went viral and caused a furore in Britain.

The response was a flood of images of people saluting while posing in various states of undress, often with strategically placed props including Union Jack flags, camouflage backpacks and teddy bears.

The Sun newspaper, meanwhile, published photographs of what it said were British soldiers serving in Afghanistan posing naked and saluting Prince Harry.

The show of support came as it was announced that Harry, an army officer who is now a trained Apache helicopter pilot, will be the patron of a charity race to the South Pole between three teams of wounded servicemen from around the world.

The prince, who last year joined a group of injured soldiers as they trekked to the North Pole, is supporting the Walking With The Wounded South Pole Allied Challenge 2013.

Troops from Britain, the US and the Commonwealth who suffered physical or cognitive injuries while serving will take part in the four-week expedition next year.

Royal officials said it was "far too early" to tell whether Harry would join the group for the gruelling trek.

    Is Great Customer Service Enough?

Obviously, we focus almost exclusively on the topics of customer service and the customer experience here at Customers That Stick. We believe that a great customer experience and superior follow up? are some of the key differentiators between a healthy organization poised for long term success and an unhealthy enterprise bleeding out its potential future.

Such lofty beliefs in the power of great customer service beg a simple question: is great customer service enough?

The answer is just as simple:

    No, it is not.

When I refer to great customer service (which we will use in in broadest sense to include the larger customer experience), I am not comparing it to incredible customer service or amazing customer service. I am not asking is great enough because it is not a strong enough superlative, as if great doesn?t cut it but incredible does. I am asking is great customer service, in and of itself, enough to make an enterprise successful?

And again, the answer is no. Customer service is not the only component of a successful organization.

You see, customer service will not save you if you buy your raw goods 30% higher than your competition or you turn 25% fewer services in a day. Pan Am airlines was known for its great customer service; yet, the company (and its TV show) no longer exist.

Is Great Customer Service Enough | Pan Am TV PromoOther factors mattered, and great customer service was not enough.

A company needs a lot of things besides great service to succeed.

    Thanks for Nothing

I can hear it now. Thanks, Adam, for making me read 300 words of the patently obvious.

Yet, I wrote this post because the above does not seem to be that obvious. A lot of the customer service advice I read seems divorced from the realities above.

Customer service does not exist in a vacuum. Customer issues must be handled with an understanding of potential liability. Employee happiness must be encouraged within an ever-constricting HR environment.

A business is the sum of its parts, and a great business breaks down silos and synergizes its many functions to work as a cohesive whole ? or at least works towards that goal.

But What About Great Customer Service?

Without great customer service, you cannot have a great business. I truly believe that.

In a great business, the customer permeates every department and is considered in any decision which might affect their experience.

In a great business, the customer is the king and customer service is more than just the initiative of the month.

And that is as it should be, for outside of monopolies and oligopolies, great customer service is no longer optional; it is a competitive necessity.

However, despite how important great customer service is to a successful enterprise, it does not stand alone. Great customer service will not save a business that is not being run effectively and profitably, that is not adapting to its environment and improving its efficiency.

So, my advice is as follows: read this blog regularly and send your customers thank you notes. But make sure you call your accountant once in awhile.

Have you seen businesses with great customer service fail?

How a few minutes of DIY can cost your life years later: Hidden ...

    By Anna Hodgekiss

    |

Dr Geoffrey Newton, aged 81, died from mesothelioma

Dr Geoffrey Newton, aged 81, died from mesothelioma

Geoffrey Newton had always prided himself on his DIY skills.

Even aged 81, he was fitting a new kitchen and bathroom in his home.

?Over the years he?d done everything from building a boat to converting an old school house into our home,? says his wife Pat, 82, a former GP.

?He was brilliant at DIY. Nothing was ever too much of a challenge.?

Unfortunately, it was this passion that most likely led to Mr Newton?s death in May.

He was suffering from mesothelioma ? cancer of the lining of the lungs ? caused by exposure to asbestos.

Experts say that even a few hours? exposure to the toxic fibres can be enough to trigger the condition later in life.

And a few hours was all it had taken for Mr Newton, a leading orthopaedic surgeon, to remove an old central heating boiler packed with white asbestos from his house in Burton-on-Trent.

?It was 37 years ago, but I still remember all the white dust that came out with it,? says Pat.

?At the time, it was known that brown and blue asbestos (there are three types) were dangerous, but not white, so we assumed the dust was harmless.

?But it?s the only occasion we can think of that Geoffrey was exposed to it, so that must have been the trigger.?

While asbestos has left a cruel legacy for families such as the Newtons, experts are warning it is still very much a risk, mainly due to thousands of homeowners who could unwittingly disturb asbestos while embarking on home renovations.

    ?

The number of people dying each year from mesothelioma has nearly quadrupled in the past 30 years.

The Department of Health estimates deaths will peak in 2016 because the danger of asbestos became widely known only in the? mid-Seventies, and the time lag between exposure and diagnosis is, typically, 30 to 40 years.

Crucially, with asbestos remaining in millions of buildings across the country, many of us are still exposing ourselves to asbestos without realising it, says Dr John Moore-Gillon, an honorary medical adviser to the British Lung Foundation (BLF).

Risk: Thousands of homeowners could unwittingly disturb asbestos while embarking on home renovations Neumann & Rodtmann/Corbis

Risk: Thousands of homeowners could unwittingly disturb asbestos while embarking on home renovations

?Many people think that because asbestos stopped being used in industry many years ago, it?s no longer an issue,? he says.

?The problem today is that people can disturb asbestos in their homes without realising it is there.

?They embark on DIY projects ? or hire a? few local lads to do some demolition work without an initial survey ? and unwittingly expose everyone to it.

?Cases will continue to rise if precautions aren?t taken.

?What is worrying is that we barely have the resources to treat the condition, so if numbers continue to rise then there could be a huge strain in terms of treating everyone.?

The BLF says asbestos was widely used in commercial buildings and homes until 1999, when it was banned, so any home built or refurbished before this date could contain asbestos.

?We don?t want to cause panic,? says Dr Moore-Gillon.

?It?s not the case that one fibre will kill you or that having a house with asbestos will put you?at risk. It?s disturbing the asbestos that?s the?problem.

?Usually, if it is found, the right thing is to seal it?away and leave it alone.

?If the area needs to be?demolished, then it can be ? but with appropriate precautions.?

Accordingly, the British Lung Foundation has launched a campaign, Take 5 To Stay Alive, urging the public to take five minutes to consider whether asbestos could be an issue before embarking on any?work.

Christine Winter, of the Independent Asbestos Training Providers, which champions safety and awareness when working with asbestos, adds: ?I am amazed at how many people have absolutely no knowledge of the danger they place themselves in when they start renovations.?

And, cautions the BLF, don?t assume trades-people know about asbestos and the risks. If you are the homeowner, you have a responsibility to protect them from exposure to fibres.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral.

Large-scale mining during the late 19th century allowed industries such as construction and shipbuilding to take advantage of its affordability, sound absorption and fire and heat resistance.

It became most popular as a building material in the Fifties, finding its way into ceiling tiles, pipe insulation, boilers, sprayed coatings, water tanks, and floor and garage roof tiles.

The dangers of asbestos to lung health began to be established from the Forties, but only became widely known in the late Seventies.

Mesothelioma has a strong association with exposure to asbestos fibres, and is extremely rare in its absence.

The disease affects the lining of the lungs and is almost always fatal, with survival from point of diagnosis usually between six months and three years.

There were more than 2,300 deaths from mesothelioma in Britain in 2009 ? more than from cervical cancer or malignant melanoma ? and the incidence is still rising due to the 30 to 40-year time lag between exposure and disease development.

Exposure to asbestos fibres can also cause lung cancer. It develops in the tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs, and can grow within the lungs and spread outside.

?Asbestos fibres are very small and easy to inhale, and once in the lungs they seem to alter the way in which cells multiply and divide,? says Dr Moore-Gillon.

?It?s probable that asbestos alters DNA and increases the likelihood of producing cells of abnormal structure and function. ?

Men account for 80?per cent of mesothelioma cases. It is less common in women because they don?t tend to work in industry.

Smoking increases the risk of developing an asbestos-related cancer by up to 75 times.

Symptoms of the disease include breathlessness, pains in the chest and a persistent cough.

?The overwhelming majority will not be signs of mesothelioma, but it?s always worth mentioning to your doctor if you have ? or suspect you may have ? come into contact with asbestos,? says Dr Moore-Gillon.

There is no cure, though early diagnosis can increase the possibility of being able to use surgery to tackle the cancer.

Other treatments include chemotherapy and radiotherapy, but these are largely to keep symptoms under control for as long as possible.

Geoffrey Newton lived 18 months after his diagnosis.

?It was all very quick,? says his widow Pat.

?He developed breathlessness, which turned out to be pleural effusion ? a build-up of fluid in the lungs. From there mesothelioma was diagnosed.

?He started off saying he wanted to book a train to Switzerland (to the Dignitas clinic), but then calmed down and did very well for 18 months after his diagnosis.

?He even insisted on fitting the kitchen and bathroom before he died. Even though he was frail, he got our daughter Sarah, who?s 37, to help with the heavy lifting.

?It was all incredibly bad luck. We have friends who worked as ships engineers and were heavily exposed to it, but they are fine.?

Many people who have been exposed unwittingly may seek compensation, but such cases are fraught legally, says Christine Winter.

?The problem lies in the proof of where the individual was exposed to asbestos, because of the long latency period before the consequences present.

?If work-related, the employer may no longer be trading or may not have had insurance for asbestos exposure.

?This will have a massive health impact in the future unless we can get the message across that the dangers of asbestos still exist.?

Someone else who knows all too well of its impact is Mavis Nye, from Whitstable, Kent.

In the early Sixties, her husband Ray was a shipwright in Chatham dockyards, and she would wash his clothes when he came home.

?They were always covered in asbestos dust ? we used to joke he looked like a snowman when he came through the door,? says Mavis, 71.

?We had no idea how lethal it was.?

Fed up of working in a dusty environment, Ray left the dockyard in 1963.

Years later, with knowledge of how lethal asbestos was, the couple feared for Ray?s health. But, in fact, it was Mavis who became unwell.

?We were on holiday in Spain in 2009 when I felt very tired and breathless walking up a hill that I?d normally have no problems with,? she says.

Back home, her GP arranged an immediate chest X-ray, and Mavis was called back to the hospital for scans.

?And then, boom ? I was told I had mesothelioma and given three months to live.

?I came home, arranged my funeral, threw out most of my clothes and bought new things for the house so Ray wouldn?t have to deal with it all.?

Mavis has survived three years, which she attributes to large doses of chemotherapy.

Her tumours have shrunk, and she can have further chemotherapy if they begin to grow again.

?It?s sometimes hard to breathe ? there?s a tightness across my chest ? but I?m still active,? she says.

Ray, 74, adds: ?Not a day goes by when I don?t wish it was the other way round.?

    HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF

    • Any home built or refurbished before 2000 could contain asbestos. It can be found in ceiling and garage roof tiles, pipe lagging, boilers, sprayed coatings and cavity-wall insulation. Other common areas are around window frames.
    • To protect yourself during a DIY project, wear overalls, eye protection and a face mask ? especially if your job is likely to produce dust. But asbestos fibres are small enough to penetrate most masks, so never assume you?re safe. Dust can also settle on clothing, which could be a serious health risk to everyone you come into contact with.
    • Asbestos comes in all shapes, sizes and colours (blue, brown and white), which are found in many building products. But as it was often mixed with other materials, it can be hard to spot. The Health & Safety Executive has produced an image gallery of typical asbestos-containing materials. Go to hse.gov.uk/asbestos/gallery.htm
    • Asbestos materials in good condition are not a health risk and should be fine if you leave them alone. Simply check their condition from time to time to ensure they haven?t started to deteriorate. If you have to remove asbestos, it?s essential you use a reputable, licensed contractor to handle and dispose of it properly.
    • If you are worried that you might have been exposed to asbestos, contact the British Lung Foundation Helpline on 03000 030 555.
