4 awkward love life questions ? and some smart answers - eHarmony

Dating is all about getting to know each other and the way we do that is by asking questions about each others lives, But are there some love life questions you might hope will never come up? Here we have 4 of the most common - and their best answers too.

We all have elements of our past that we wish hadn?t happened ? the toe curling, gut churning memories of mistakes we have made before we knew better. Most people would rather lock those memories away and put it down to experience but a date will often be curious about our track record because our conduct in the past could give indications as to how we would conduct ourselves in a relationship with them. They may try to establish this by asking questions and some of these can be quite awkward.

1. ? ? ??How many relationships have you had??

This can be a very awkward question particularly for people who have had a string of bad relationships but also for people who have had very few or maybe not been in a relationship for a long time. Having lots might give the impression that you have issues with commitment while too few could indicate a lack of experience. Either way your experience is your experience and it can be comforting to think of you previous relationships as stepping stones taking you to the one that is right for you.

As with any personal questions it is not advisable to go into too much detail on the first few dates. Wait until you are in an established exclusive couple before you really open up about matters of the heart especially to do with exes.

Smart answer: Enough to know what I want now.

2.????? Why did your last relationship end?

This question can come up quite early on in dating conversation ? it is natural to want to know how come this gorgeous creature in front of you is on the singles scene. The key to answering it is to keep it brief and to not use it as an opportunity to offload all your hurt and resentment about your ex ? no matter how justified your feelings are no date really wants to know all the ins and outs of a bad break-up ? or even a good one.

They are asking to find out that it is really over and that you are emotionally available for them. In order for this to be the case you need to have come to terms with the past and not be carrying it around with you.

Smart answer: Because if it hadn?t I wouldn?t be here with you.

3.????? Do you believe in monogamy?

Any question to do with sex can be awkward when you are first dating. It is a sensitive subject and one that is likely to come up if the person you are dating has been cheated on in the past. They are asking because they want reassurance that they are not going to get stung in the same way again. It can be a particularly awkward question if in the past you have been unfaithful to a partner or been promiscuous but again the key is to avoid over sharing. Answer truthfully from where you are today rather than going into details about how you behaved in the past. If a monogamous relationship is not what you are looking for it is best to be upfront about that from the beginning.

Smart answer: Today I know what is important to me.

4.????? When did you lose your virginity?

This can be an awkward question because people are afraid of being judged by their answer. If a date is asking this ? or any personal question ? and you don?t feel comfortable talking about it then it is fine to say that. If you do answer keep it brief, factual and light ? many people have funny anecdotes about their first sexual experience but don?t worry if you haven?t, just give the answer that you feel most comfortable with even if that is no answer at all.

Smart answer:? Does it count if I found it again?

These are just a few examples of awkward questions that might come up of course there will be others. With them all remember the 3 golden rules when anyone asks you an awkward question:

?-?Smile to relax the atmosphere between you and the question poser. If you are embarrassed about the answer, smiling or laughing can release your tension.

?-?You don?t have to answer every question someone asks; it is ok to say ?I?d prefer not to answer that.? As you get to know them better you might choose to reveal more.

- Don?t over share in your response ? remember your date is trying to establish whether you are someone they want to pursue a relationship with ? they don?t need your whole life story to do that.

The Mathisen Corollary: Further meditation on Huo Yuuanjia

Here in California it is still January 18, and I am still continuing the direction of thought from the previous post honoring Huo Yuanjia.?? Huo Yuanjia's achievement in founding the Jingwu Athletic Association in 1909 cannot be underestimated.? In their 2010 book Jingwu: The School That Transformed Kung Fu, authors Brian Kennedy and Elizabeth Guo demonstrate that the establishment of this school marked a significant change in the way that kung fu was taught, one that would reverberate to this day, and one with very important implications.

They write:

The first public martial arts school where one could just walk in the door, pay a fee, and sign up was the Jingwu Association, which opened in 1909 and ushered in a new era in Chinese martial arts training.? The Jingwu's most influential time ran from 1909 to 1924.? The founding of the Jingwu Association, with its focus on "walk in, sign up, and learn Chinese martial arts as a form of exercise and recreation" marks the single most important turning point in Chinese martial arts -- the transition from being a manual trade associated with the military, militias and bodyguards to being a form of cultural recreation.

In fairness, it should be mentioned that there were other privately funded martial arts groups in China who were doing the same things that the Jingwu Association was doing.? But these other groups, for whatever variety of reasons, were all short-lived and not particularly influential.? 3.

Earlier in the book (page x), they noted the other significant "firsts" that the Jingwu Association should be credited with:

  • The first public Chinese martial arts training facility.
  • The first to teach Chinese martial arts as a sport or recreation.
  • The first to place women's programs on an equal footing with men's programs.
  • The first to use books, magazines and movies to promote Chinese martial arts.
In other words, Huo Yuanjia's vision (and by all accounts he was central in the founding of the Jingwu Association) in large part created the transition to the way we think of martial arts training today, a vision that clearly established four aspects still very much present in the landscape around the world to this day.

In short, I believe it is no great stretch to deduce that Huo Yuanjia and his fellow founders of this new association believed that martial arts are an important aspect of life, one that goes along with other forms of learning.? In fact, as Brian Kennedy and Elizabeth Guo inform us, the Jingwu Association was not only devoted to training its members in the martial arts, but in providing other forms of learning, including "cerebral activities" including playing chess and learning from books (xi).? In other words, its founders clearly saw a connection between the mental and physical disciplines and the importance of each.

If you study the martial arts, it may be of some interest to think that Huo Yuanjia seems to have wanted you to be able to have the opportunity to do so, and to have believed that such an opportunity is as important to human development as any other form of learning.

In any event, it is also noteworthy that the movie Fearless (2006), which features Jet Li as Huo Yuanjia, takes its name from a line in the Tao Teh Ching of Lao Tzu (33):?

Mastering others is strength --

Mastering yourself makes you fearless.

Syrian foreign minister calls on rebels to disarm and negotiate

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria's foreign minister has invited the country's rebels to lay down their weapons and take part in a dialogue conference, saying everyone who participates will be included in a new Cabinet with wide executive powers.

Walid al-Moallem said in a live interview on state TV late Saturday that any opposition parties can join the Cabinet as long as they reject foreign intervention in Syria.

Earlier this month, President Bashar Assad dismissed calls that he step down, vowing to keep fighting.

Assad also proposed a national reconciliation conference, elections and a new constitution ? concessions offered previously over the course of the uprising that began in March 2011.

The opposition says that Assad can play no role in a resolution to the conflict.

In Mali, French forces move north amid plea for faster African deployments

Malian troops have entered the key garrison town of Diabaly after French airstrikes pushed out Islamist rebels. But many residents wonder if they're gone for good.?

Malian soldiers rejoice as they come back from victory in Diabaly, a key town in the north.

?As Malian troops enter Diabaly, a garrison town of 35,000 recently abandoned by rebels in response to French air strikes,?France?s foreign minister has warned his African counterparts that "African friends need to take the lead" in the ongoing military campaign against Islamist rebels in Mali.?

The Malian Army?s inability to hold Diabaly was just one of a string of military setbacks that prompted France to mobilize more than 2,000 troops on the ground and to call for West African nations to accelerate troop deployments to Mali. Islamist rebels gained control of the town ? just 270 miles from the capital city of Bamako ? only days after France intervened Jan. 11 to stem an ambitious rebel push southward to the town of Konna, in central Mali. Diabaly, with its relative proximity to Bamako,?has since come to be viewed as a second frontline of a conflict that was originally envisioned as a limited air campaign to support Malian troops.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius made his plea at a special Mali summit in neighboring Ivory Coast on Saturday, where West Africa regional bloc ECOWAS met to iron out the details of sending West African troops to Mali. Troops from Nigeria and Togo have already arrived in Bamako, but they represent just a fraction of the approximately 3,000 West African troops slated to join the fight. Most agree, however, that it will be weeks before more African boots are on the ground and start replacing French ones.

Until then, French troops find themselves bearing the brunt of of the?military responsibility. On Saturday, The Monitor watched a convoy of armored vehicles and lighter trucks prepare to move toward the town of Niono, northeast of Bamako. French troops were digging trenches ? replete with sandbags and heavy weaponry ? as far south as Sarakala, a tiny village about 65 miles south of Diabaly.

Until yesterday, the French presence in Niono was ?virtually nonexistent, and the checkpoint on the road to Diabaly was manned by Malian troops keeping current by watching news on TV. Some of the people passing through were farmers accessing their fields, while others were among those taking the opportunity to flee Diabaly in the wake of the rebel departure. Several residents confirmed that the Islamist rebels had not allowed anyone to leave the town ?while it was under their control, part of an effort to embed themselves within the population to deter French use of air power.

Diabaly resident Fatoumata Shonta was able to escape by telling the rebels that she was going to her onion gardens. Once there, she snuck out on a flatbed truck used for transporting rice with her baby girl and toddler son in tow. Ms. Shonta left with only a small bucket of items: sandals, a t-shirt, and a bit of food.

French forces indicated that the situation in Diabaly might still be tenuous. "In theory, there are few or no rebels there, but that needs to be confirmed, so we will wait to see what happens in the days to come over there," Lt. Col. "Frederic," a French Foreign Legion spokesman in?Mali, told the Associated Press. His family name was not given in accordance with standard procedure.?

Many of those fleeing Diabaly and arriving in Niono were quick to stop and make phone calls, capitalizing on their first chance to contact friends and family since the rebel takeover. The cellular network in the city had been down since Tuesday, frustrating citizens and journalists alike, as contradictory reports leaked out of the unreachable town.

But even amid the news that Diabaly is no longer under rebel control, many in nearby Niono wonder if the Islamists are gone for good. The surrounding terrain, a mix of green scrub and desert, offers considerable mobility to insurgents, and in the words of mayor Moriba Coulibaly, ?there are lots of ways into Niono.??

Ancient Earth's geochemistry: Some tectonic processes driving volcanic activity occurred 3.8 billion years ago

Jan. 18, 2013 ? Researchers still have much to learn about the volcanism that shaped our planet's early history. New evidence from a team led by Carnegie's Frances Jenner demonstrates that some of the tectonic processes driving volcanic activity, such as those taking place today, were occurring as early as 3.8 billion years ago. Their work is published in Geology.

Upwelling and melting of Earth's mantle at mid-ocean ridges, as well as the eruption of new magmas on the seafloor, drive the continual production of the oceanic crust. As the oceanic crust moves away from the mid-ocean ridges and cools it becomes denser than the underlying mantle. Over time the majority of this oceanic crust sinks back into the mantle, which can trigger further volcanic eruptions. This process is known as subduction and it takes place at plate boundaries.

Volcanic eruptions that are triggered by subduction of oceanic crust are chemically distinct from those erupting at mid-ocean ridges and oceanic island chains, such as Hawaii. The differences between the chemistry of magmas produced at each of these tectonic settings provide 'geochemical fingerprints' that can be used to try to identify the types of tectonic activity taking place early in Earth's history.

Previous geochemical studies have used similarities between modern subduction zone magmas and those erupted about 3.8 billion years ago, during the Eoarchean era, to argue that subduction-style tectonic activity was taking place early in Earth's history. But no one was able to locate any suites of volcanic rocks with compositions comparable to modern mid-ocean ridge or oceanic island magmas that were older than 3 billion years and were also free from contamination by continental crust.

Because of this missing piece of the puzzle, it has been ambiguous whether the subduction-like compositions of volcanic rocks erupted 3.8 billion years ago really were generated at subduction zones, or whether this magmatism should be attributed to other processes taking place early in Earth's history. Consequently, evidence for subduction-related tectonics earlier than 3 billion years ago has been highly debated in scientific literature.

Jenner and her team collected 3.8 billion-year-old volcanic rocks from Innersuartuut, an island in southwest Greenland, and found the samples have compositions comparable to modern oceanic islands, such as Hawaii.

"The Innersuartuut samples may represent the world's oldest recognized suite of oceanic island basalts, free from contamination by continental crust," Jenner said. "This evidence strengthens previous arguments that subduction of oceanic crust into the mantle has been taking place since at least 3.8 billion years ago."

LiveJuiced - Lance Armstrong's Organized Crime Operation

Lance Armstrong soared into the stratosphere of global sports superheroes, attracted almost universal (outside of France) love and praise, and became one of the wealthiest athletes on the planet ? on a wings of what was, arguably, the most sophisticated cheating operation ever perpetrated by an individual or team in modern sports. ?The only comparison would be the infamous systemic abuses of former Soviet Bloc nations like East Germany.

There?s no minimizing this story. ?It?s the magnitude of Lance?s celebrity, the enormity of his accomplishments, the extraordinary nine-figure wealth he accumulated, and the jaw-dropping sophistication of the deception around his own use and his team?s use of performance-enhancing drugs, that makes this such a massive cheating scandal. ?This was a professional operation ? an organized crime operation without the physical violence. ?It had multiple individuals conspiring to act illegally, to elude the authorities and their investigations, to defraud companies, to silence and intimidate and punish anyone who dared to tell the truth, and to make off with tens of millions of dollars under false pretenses. ?How is this different from an organized crime operation that, say, rigs the system and tips the gambling odds in your favor, defrauding others out of their money?

And it harms not only Lance. ?It has harmed the lives of many individuals who told the truth ? and were ruthlessly buried by the wrath of Lance Armstrong; it harms the organization he founded and all the people it helps. ?It betrays the children who looked up to him. ?And it damages the integrity of sports. ?Apparently half the peloton at any one time was juicing, but I don?t really care. ?What?s wrong is wrong, even if others are doing it. ?Lance had the courage to fight back against testicular cancer, and he had the courage to compete at the highest levels of a very dangerous sport ? but he did not have the courage to do the right thing when the selfish thing looked more attractive.

A young man who steals $100 worth of merchandise from an apartment store can end up in prison. ?Lance amasses over $100,000,000 through fraud, and he gets?what? ?A two-parter on Oprah?

Lance will lose a lot of money ? but he has a lot of money to lose. ?Presumably he?s hoping that he?s made enough money that he?ll still be rich when all is said and done. ?He?s suffering global humiliation ? but he?s not suffering as badly as he made his ?friends? suffer when they questioned his cheating operation or came clean on the corruption within the sport. ?His triumph over cancer, his laudable foundation work, his inspiration of others to persevere and do good, these are worthy things. ?But he exploded all of that value by massively cheating, massively lying, and massively denying it and attacking anyone who stood in his way, for decades. ?I?m grateful his foundation helped people ? but now it looks like the charity funded by the mob boss.

Here are words I do not want to hear from Lance Armstrong tonight and tomorrow in the Oprah interview: ?Everyone was doing it?The whole sport is corrupt?I?m still proud of what I accomplished.? ?We know, Lance, that you?re an extraordinary athlete with or without the juice. ?We know you did not do this alone. ?We know, or strongly suspect, that there were some within the sports authority structures who enabled this, or took bribes. ?But this is the important point: apparently everything you accomplished was rising on a tide of performance-enhancing drugs.

I?m angry about this as an athlete. ?For those who?ve never glanced at my bio, I was a all-around national champion gymnast when I was young. ?I represented the United States overseas and won numerous event, all-around and team national titles, until a broken neck ended my career in my sophomore year in college. ?The integrity of the sport ? of sports ? means a great deal to me. ?Athletes, whether they like it or not (and Lance clearly did), become heroes to children. ?Athletes have an opportunity to inspire and edify. ?And when someone like Lance Armstrong wins it all, for years, and denies cheating for years, and then is exposed as a fraud, it places every other athlete under greater scrutiny, places every other elite athlete under a cloud.

I will forgive Lance Armstrong, because I believe in forgiveness. ?I believe in redemption, and I hope he finds it. ?But Lance doesn?t need my forgiveness. ?(Of course, he has never thought of me for a moment in his life.) ?He needs the forgiveness of every person whose trust he betrayed, every sponsor whose money he took under false pretenses, every clean competitor he beat out for the cash, every truth-teller whose career he destroyed, every kid who believed in his innocence and faux heroism, and every young athlete who is going to dope ? and suffer the consequences ? because Lance Armstrong did it. ?And while he?s at it, he might as well apologize to every athlete who tries to do it right, every athlete who strives for excellence on the basis of her own speed, strength and skill, every athlete who saw the opportunity to cheat but passed it up.

Only by apologizing humbly and absolutely, by helping children learn from the error of his ways, and devoting himself to the good work of his foundation will Lance Armstrong turn this all into something good.

(AP Photo/Elaine Thompson)

(AP) ? Some frequent fliers say they aren't worried about safety aboard Boeing's problem-plagued 787 aircraft, while many less-seasoned travelers are often unaware of what model of plane they're flying on.

That makes it anyone's guess whether Boeing Co., or the airlines that use its planes, will pay a price for concerns surrounding the 787. The planes were grounded worldwide on Thursday after a battery fire on one, and an emergency landing on another after pilots smelled something burning.

"I'm as excited today to get on a 787 as I was a year ago," says Edward Pizzarello, a travel blogger who has logged four flights on the 787, which Boeing calls the Dreamliner. "Boeing will fix this, and I'll be flying on this plane for many years."

Lee Simonetta, a research engineer at Georgia Tech, said he too would hop on the Dreamliner again. He was among the aviation fanatics aboard the plane's first trip with paying customers, an All Nippon Airways flight from Tokyo to Hong Kong in October 2011. It was a time to marvel at a jet made of composite materials that make it lighter and far more fuel-efficient, and at its use of electrical systems to do just about everything.

That was before a series of incidents including fuel leaks, cracked windshields and overheating batteries gained worldwide attention. Photos of charred battery boxes from the planes popped up all over the Internet. Safety officials around the world took a second look at the planes, and the Federal Aviation Administration grounded 787s in this country ? United Airlines is the only U.S. carrier to fly them, but several foreign airlines use them on flights to and from the U.S.

Boeing officials and some frequent fliers say there are hiccups with just about every new plane, and the 787 was a particularly bold technological leap over previous aircraft. But will those reassurances satisfy the flying public?

Mary Schiavo, a former inspector general of the U.S. Transportation Department and FAA critic who's now an aviation lawyer, said she would not fly aboard a Dreamliner.

"It's very serious. Nobody wants to get on a plane with these things happening," Schiavo said.

Schiavo said she thinks that if Boeing and the FAA believe there is something wrong with a few batteries, replacing them with other lithium-ion batteries would be a quick repair. But, she said, the FAA might force Boeing to use an entirely different type of battery, which could require redesign work and a new round of regulatory approvals that might take months.

Blake Fleetwood, president of Cook Travel in New York, said a few customers have called in the past two days to ask about the plane but none have changed their itineraries. Of course, those flights won't involve 787s if safety regulators haven't cleared the planes by takeoff time.

"A month ago we had people who were dying to get on this plane," Fleetwood said. "Now they're showing a bit more trepidation."

Many people who don't fly frequently may not even notice what type of plane they're on.

From interviews with more than a dozen travelers at Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport, it appeared that price, schedule and nonstop service are more important to consumers than the type plane itself. Only one knew that the government had grounded the 787.

Curtis Johnson, a retailer from San Antonio, said that he purposely booked on a 787 last month from Houston to Newark, N.J. "Very impressive," he said, describing the large windows, wide seats and other flourishes.

Johnson said he pays attention to the type of plane when he books a long flight, and he admitted that he might be "a little bit more nervous than I was three weeks ago" about the 787.

Christine Carlton, who arrived on a United flight from San Antonio, said she wouldn't seek to change planes but would instead "just be stuck and hope for the best."

Many sounded like Casey Ager, a 22-year-old from Seattle, who said he wouldn't have any misgivings about getting on a 787.

"If it's out there and they're letting us fly, I trust it's ready to go," he said.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, who oversaw a moratorium on offshore drilling after the BP oil spill, will step down in March, Obama administration officials said Wednesday.

Salazar has run the Interior Department throughout President Barack Obama's first term.

A former senator from Colorado, Salazar pushed renewable power such as solar and wind, but gained the most attention for his role in the drilling moratorium, a key part of the administration's response to the April 2010 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico. It was one of the largest environmental disasters in U.S. history and led to the unprecedented shutdown of offshore drilling.

Business groups and Gulf Coast political leaders said the shutdown crippled the oil and gas industry and cost thousands of jobs, even aboard rigs not operated by BP PLC.

But Salazar said the industry-wide moratorium was the correct call.

"I think we're in the right direction," he told The Associated Press during a July 2010 tour of the Gulf, adding that his ultimate goal was to allow deepwater operations to resume safely.

Salazar acknowledged that the drilling ban caused hardship, but he said his job was to protect the public and the environment even as the administration tried to boost domestic energy production.

The moratorium was lifted in October 2010, although offshore drilling operations did not begin for several more months. Some Gulf Coast lawmakers continue to complain about the slow pace of drilling permits under the Interior Department, which renamed and revamped the agency that oversees offshore drilling in the wake of the spill.

Salazar also approved the nation's first offshore wind farm, Cape Wind, off the Massachusetts coast.

On land, Salazar has promoted solar power in the West and Southwest, approving an unprecedented number of projects, even as oil and gas continue to be approved on federal land.

Salazar also oversaw the settlement of a multibillion dispute with Native American tribes that had lingered for more than a decade.

Salazar tangled with oil companies throughout his tenure.

"We don't believe we ought to be drilling anywhere and everywhere," Salazar said in 2010, before the BP spill. "We believe we need a balanced approach and a thoughtful approach" that allows development of oil and gas leases on public lands while also protecting national parks, endangered species and municipal watersheds.

Salazar criticized the Bush administration for what he called a "headlong rush" to lease public lands. Early in his tenure, Salazar suspended 60 of 77 leases in Utah that had been approved by the Bush administration.

"In the prior administration the oil and gas industry were the kings of the world. Whatever they wanted to happen, happened," Salazar said in January 2010, adding that those days were over.

Salazar, 57, is the latest Cabinet secretary to leave the administration as Obama heads into his second term. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Pentagon chief Leon Panetta, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis are also leaving. Energy Secretary Steven Chu is widely expected to leave, though his departure has not been announced. Environmental Protection Agency chief Lisa Jackson has announced that she will leave.

The administration officials who discussed his plans spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly before any announcement.

Facebook concept used by 16th century scholars

Jan. 15, 2013 ? Our obsession with social networking is not exclusive to the 21st century, according to researchers from Royal Holloway university.

The idea of creating networks of members and sharing information dates back to the 16th century Italian Academies, which saw young scholars create nicknames for themselves and develop emblems and mottoes to form groups with which they exchanged information.

The discovery was made during a ?1,130,000 collaborative research project between Royal Holloway, the British Library and Reading University, in which a team of academics are cataloguing and investigating the works of the Italian Academies, dating from 1525 to 1700. The project provides information about the academies, their members, publications, activities and emblems.

Researchers were surprised to realise just how similar the activities of these 16th and 17th century scholars were with society today.

Professor Jane Everson, Principal-investigator, said: "Just as we create user names for our profiles on Facebook and Twitter and create circles of friends on Google plus, these scholars created nicknames, shared -- and commented on -- topical ideas, the news of the day, and exchanged poems, plays and music.

"It may have taken a little longer for this to be shared without the internet, but through the creation of yearbooks and volumes of letters and speeches, they shared the information of the day."

The scholars created satirical names for their academies such as Gelati and Intronati. Professor Everson explains: "They are jokey names, which really mean the opposite of what they say. Intronati has nothing to do with thrones; it means dazed, stunned, knocked out and so not able to think straight -- but really the Intronati were engaged in serious study, debates, dramatic performances and the like from the moment they were founded in the 1520s -- and they are still as active as ever in their home city of Siena. The Gelati were not going around singing 'just one cornetto'. Gelati means the frozen ones -- so a pun on the fact that these academicians far from being totally inactive through being frozen cold, were busy debating, exploring ideas, challenging received opinions and changing the cultural world of their home city of Bologna, and indeed of Italy and far beyond."

Just as the names of the academies and the nicknames of the individual members were fun, so are the emblems and mottos which illustrate the name of the academy. The scholars took great delight in creating puzzling emblems with hidden meanings.

Professor Everson adds: "They do sometimes take some working out, but it is great fun when you can see the hidden meanings in the images."

The Director-General of UNESCO urges military forces ... - Africa News

PARIS, France, January 15, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova launched an appeal to all military forces in Mali: "I ask all armed forces to make every effort to protect the cultural heritage of the country, which has already been severely damaged?.

Invoking the Hague Convention of 1954 for the Protection of Cultural Property in the event of armed conflict and its two Protocols, Irina Bokova sent a letter to Malian and French authorities urging them to respect the Convention, and in particular Article 4 that prohibits "exposing (cultural) property to destruction or damage (?)? and calls for ?refraining from any act of hostility, directed against such property?.

"Mali's cultural heritage is a jewel whose protection is important for the whole of humanity. This is our common heritage, nothing can justify damaging it. It carries the identity and values of a people. The destruction of World Heritage sites in Mali in 2012, especially the mausoleums in Timbuktu, sparked a wave of indignation across the world, helping to raise awareness of the critical situation facing the Malian people. The current military intervention must protect people and secure the cultural heritage of Mali?.

In anticipation of military operations, UNESCO has already provided the topographic features relative to the location of sites to the concerned General Staffs, as well as individual brochures and information for soldiers to prevent damage to cultural heritage. The information has been shared with police and aid workers.

The Director-General has mobilized also UNESCO's Emergency Fund, the World Heritage Fund to protect the Cultural Property of Mali. "I thank especially Norway, Croatia and Mauritius for their contribution to developing preventive measures and the training of armed forces on the prevention of illicit trafficking, with the mobilization of neighboring countries,? she said.

These efforts come in support of the implementation of the three resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council on the situation in Mali in 2012, all of which condemned the destruction of cultural heritage and called for its protection, giving it a place of central importance.

?The protection of cultural heritage is an essential part of all sustainable efforts to build peace and respect for human rights,? declared the Director-General.

Mali has four sites inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. This exceptional heritage reflects the achievements of human ingenuity in this region and remains a symbol of intercultural dialogue, and the tolerant and peaceful practice of religion. This cultural heritage, associated to the development of quality education, is a pillar of peace building and society in Mali.

?UNESCO stands ready to make its contribution, and we are monitoring the situation in real time. I call for the support of all Member States, in particular through the Special Fund established at the request of the World Heritage Committee, to fund future operations, especially regarding assessment, rehabilitation and reconstruction," concluded the Director General.

Teachers, students among 50 nabbed in Central Florida child sex sting

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -

Seminole County deputies arrested 50 people, including teachers, tourists and college students, in Central Florida in a weeklong online child sex exploitation sting.

According to deputies, the undercover operation, "Operation Cardea," had officers chatting online, through email and phone with people who believed they were talking with a minor or with an adult that had a minor available for sexual activity.

[READ: Full list of arrests]

Arrestees ranged from ages 19 to 60 years old and including a Volusia County high school teacher, a tourist visiting from Turkey, school employees, college students and residents from out of state, according to a release.

Investigators say Jorge Ferreira, a science teacher at Ocoee Middle School, went to meet the undercover officers at a 7-Eleven thinking he was going to be meeting up with a 14-year-old boy.

David Miller, who works as an interpreter for deaf children at Lake Sybelia Elementary School in Orange County is accused of posting an online ad seeking a 13-year-old boy, according to investigators.

Anthony Wilks, a Seminole County school maintenance worker allegedly sent inappropriate pictures of himself to a detective he thought was an 11-year-old girl.

New Smyrna Beach High School English teacher Duncas St. Gelais is accused of bringing condoms to have sex with a 14-year-old girl.

"He sent us his actual photograph and was quoted by saying he had a lot to lose," detectives said.

Investigators said St. Gelais told them he had never propositioned any of his students.

It's the teachers who have made parents angry. One parent told Local 6 that her son trusted his teacher, and now he doesn't know who he can trust.

Rebecca Emery said, "My son's face was very distraught and he started to say, 'How do I know there's no more people working there that are doing this?' He also said, 'I trusted him.'"

Emery said St Gelais taught English at New Smyrna Beach High School until his arrest last week. Parents said the school never told them why the teacher was gone. It's unclear what the district has done with St Gelais since his arrest. Local 6 asked the district those questions and we're still waiting to hear back.

Deputies said the the offenders traveled from various cities and counties in Florida, the farthest away being from Pasco County, to have sex with children as young as 11 years old at a house in Oviedo.

Deputies made contact with the men on a variety of websites, with some of the men posting on classified ads looking for sex.

When the 50 men are released from jail on bond, they will be prohibited from having contact with children, including the school employees. At least two of the school employees have resigned.

The operation was a partnership with agencies from Casselberry, Longwood, Orlando, Oviedo and Sanford police officers, along with Brevard, Orange, Lake Manatee, Osceola, Polk, Sarasota and Volusia County Sheriff's Offices.? The FBI and the FDLE also contributed to the investigation.

Additional safety information can be found in the FBI?s ?Parent?s Guide to Internet Safety."

Then he began saying he was misquoted, misunderstood, and that though he is a Christian and being gay goes against his beliefs he is not anti-gay. The fact is it is extremely likely that Hunter already has, or has had, gay <b>Baseball</b>-playing teammates, but just didn?t know it. They played catch together. They may have gone out for dinner and drinks together. And yes, they probably shared the shower together. That essentially means that the difference is the straight player?s awareness of gayness. The theoretical discomfort arising from whether a player is gay or not comes down to being naked in the shower at the same time and thinking the other guy is giving you the once-over. Certainly, no one is saying that if you are gay you can?t hit the curveball. Detroit Tigers? outfielder Torii Hunter, who has switched from the Angels this off-season, recently made controversial remarks about potentially playing with a gay player. Credit: Peter G. A dependable piggyback reliever, Ottavino has decided to build on that in spring training with the Rockies rather than participate in the World <b>Baseball</b> Classic for the Italian team. ?Just too important a year for me,? Ottavino said Friday in a text message. ?I want to put my best foot forward in spring.? The Rockies claimed Ottavino off waivers from the Cardinals on April 4. He pitched well in Triple-A for the Sky Sox, earning a promotion. He finished 5-1 with a 4.56 ERA in 79 innings, his ERA bloated by a pair of poor outings late in the season. The Rockies will use a five-man rotation this year, but plan on keeping at least two hybrids, as they call them. With Josh Roenicke lost to the Twins on a waiver claims, Ottavino, Josh Outman, Edgmer Escalona and Manny Corpas are among the candidates to fill the role. The piggyback relievers have designated work days, and, if last year?s model is followed, will be available for up to 50 pitches. Ottavino, 27, has a powerful fastball, complemented by a swing-and-miss slider. There was some talk of having him compete for a rotation spot at season?s end, but that has been tabled. Several Rockies plan to participate in the World <b>Baseball</b> Classic including shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, if cleared in a workout next week, and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, who has d ...</p>http://feeds.denverpost.com/~r/dp-blogs-rockies/~3/Loz6bFQVgrk/Fri, 11 Jan 2013 21:42:37 GMTEx-Baseball Commissioner Suggests Separate Wing at Hall of Fame for 'Cheaters.'...http://www.facebook.com/woai1200/posts/402328223182743 <p><font color="Gray">Source: www.facebook.com --- Friday, January 11, 2013</font><br />Ex-<b>Baseball</b> Commissioner Suggests Separate Wing at Hall of Fame for 'Cheaters.' The entrance was a hallway lined with mirrors, leading to a giant T in white at the end, when you turned into the main area you were greeted with the T-Mobile gaming consoles and the Ducati used in what have been described by some as the most annoying cell phone commercials ever. I asked the person who was in charge of the pink room if that was the bike from the commercial. He informed me that ?Yes, [woman's name]?s butt was right in that seat.? I said I didn?t know her name and nice to know and moved on as that really wasn?t what I was interested in the bike for. I like bikes and hate that commercial. I was then shown T-Mobile?s plan to ruin <b>Baseball</b>, and it?s quite an interesting use and abuse of technology. T-Mobiel announced they have partnered with Major League <b>Baseball</b> a couple of days ago. In the above picture, on the right there?s a little box for their ?bullpen/dugout phones.? The idea here is that players take the phones onto the field and these phones have features activated by stepping over imaginary lines. On the one side of the line, swiping the phone allows a call to the bullpen, on the other it allows a call to the dugout. Or pretty much any way that it?s needed it can be configured.
