Dot Earth Blog: Creating a Vital Long View for Gauging Environmental Change

[Production note: I'm helping my older son relocate to New Orleans (22 hours of driving) so comment moderation and posting will be unavoidably sporadic for a few days.]

Last year,?Michael SanClements, an ecologist affiliated with the?Institute?of Arctic & Alpine Research at the University of Colorado, sent a Dot Earth ?Postcard? about a project studying soil microbes in Antarctica. Here?s a fresh contribution from SanClements, along with colleague Jeff Taylor,?from the other end of the planet ? Alaska?s Arctic tundra.

They are both staff scientists with the?National Ecological Observatory Network, an initiative supported by the National Science Foundation that has a goal of creating a view of ecological change that spans the continent over the next three decades. As they explain below, without consistent monitoring, it?s hard to gauge the scope and causes of changes in environmental conditions:?

Some ecosystems provide economic and social benefits at the local level. Others exist far from our cities in inconceivably large landscapes and have the ability to influence processes at the global scale. The tundra is such a place ? remote, vast and home to enormous stores of frozen carbon which play a critical role in our climate?s future. Earlier this fall, we visited the tundra as part of a massive new project which will monitor ecological change across all of the continent?s major ecosystems.

Toolik Field Station ? 158 miles north of the Arctic Circle in Alaska. ?It?s dusk and we?ve just arrived. Thom Walker, the assistant camp manager, has been kind enough to save us some dinner.? From the windows in the cafeteria, we can see ptarmigan, white against the brown of the tundra. And in the distance, more white ? the snow-covered Brooks Range rising to meet an enormous autumn moon. A beautiful landscape, and one we consider ourselves lucky to spend time in.

We?re here because we need to prepare a temporary meteorological station to survive the long dark winter. Built in June by Dr. Henry Loescher, the tower, located high on a ridge overlooking the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and Dalton Highway, is collecting data on prevailing wind directions and annual temperature variations that are crucial for the design and construction of a National Ecological Observatory Network research site. Eventually, a tower will be built here that will measure not just meteorological data, but a suite of observations related to solar radiation, greenhouse gases, pollutants, the terrestrial carbon cycle and soil.

With six such sites planned in Alaska, and 60 total in the United Sates, this network, best known under the acronym NEON, is the world?s first continental scale ecological observatory. Over the next 30 years, these sites will collect hundreds of terabytes of ecological data annually to help understand the impacts of climate change, land-use change and invasive species on natural resources and biodiversity.

The Toolik Field Station and tower site are extremely remote. We flew into Deadhorse, or Prudhoe Bay as it?s often called. It?s not so much a town as a rugged industrial work camp situated near the frigid Arctic Ocean at the far end of the pipeline; it exists mainly to facilitate the extraction and pumping of oil. From there, you head south on the Dalton highway, the lone road, for hundreds of miles. After three bumpy, sometimes scary and always beautiful hours you?ll find Toolik Field Station. Situated on the north side of the Brooks Range and the shores of Toolik Lake, the station supports hundreds of scientists each year as they study the changing Arctic.

In this era of rapid environmental change driven by the pressures of expanding human population and a changing climate, long-term ecological research is more important than ever. Short-term data sets are like snapshots of the environment at a single point in time. They lack the temporal context to effectively answer questions about the trajectory and causes of environmental change.

Initiatives like NEON and the Long Term Ecological Research Network aim to help us to track and understand the effects of human activities on ecosystems that provide valuable services to society. It may not be as sexy as the Mars Curiosity Rover or a big field campaign to an exotic place, but sustained, long-term observations are essential to answering many scientific questions and may one day be used by future generations to answer questions that haven?t been asked yet.

Obama lays wreath, honors nation's veterans

At the Arlington cemetery in Virginia, President Barack Obama paid tribute to veterans. "Each year on the 11th day of the 11th month, we pause as a nation and as a people to pay tribute to you," the president said. NBC's Lester Holt has more.

President Barack Obama honored the nation?s military veterans on Sunday, paying tribute at a Veterans Day ceremony at Arlington Memorial Cemetery to "the heroes over the generations who have served this country of ours with distinction."?

In keeping with tradition, he laid a wreath he laid at Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., an act he said was intended to "remember every service member who has ever worn our nation's uniform."

Obama said in a speech at the cemetery's Memorial Amphitheater that America will never forget the sacrifice made by its veterans and their families.?

"Whenever America has come under attack, you?ve risen to her defense. Whenever our freedoms have come under assault, you?ve responded with resolve," the president said.

"Today, the proud nation expresses our gratitude but we do so mindful that no ceremony or parade, no hug or handshake is enough to truly honor that service."

Obama also noted, "This is the first Veterans Day in a decade in which there are no American troops dying and fighting in Iraq" -- a statement that drew polite applause from the crowd.

The country expresses its gratitude for veterans and their service with ceremonies and parades.

The president touted the work of first l ady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, for their involvement with the Joining Forces campaign, which urges businesses to hire veterans. He also reaffirmed his commitment to continuing the post-9/11 GI Bill program, which provides college education funding for those who have served, and said soldiers suffering war-related health problems will get the care they need. ? ?

"No one who fights for this country overseas should everhave to fight for a job, or a roof over their head, or the carethat they have earned when they come home,'' he said.

After the speech, Obama visited Arlington National Cemetery?s Section 60, the final resting place for the service members who lost their lives during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Dozens of family members and individuals were at the area?paying respects.?The president and first lady talked quietly with some of them.

In the Badger State, divided over and baffled by Obamacare

BELOIT, Wisconsin (Reuters) - To Tim Givhan, Obamacare shouldn't be an excuse for election-year polemics: "It's a lifeline."

A former IT specialist, Givhan tripped on a machine at work and landed on his head, suffering neurological damage. His employer's insurance company wouldn't pay for an operation, saying the outcome was iffy. Plagued by debilitating migraines and tremors, he quit work. His wife, an attorney, divorced him.

Givhan, 49, has moved back to his mother's home in Beloit, Wisconsin. He has no health insurance but expects to get it once the Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, takes full effect. "I often think of killing myself," he said. "But I have a 2-year-old son, and I can't do that to him."

Whether the sweeping 2010 law is fully implemented, as President Barack Obama intends, or repealed, as GOP nominee Mitt Romney pledges, no policy difference in next week's election is likely to affect more Americans in their daily lives.

This small Midwestern city - which anthropologist Margaret Mead once called "a microcosm of America" - offers a window into what is at stake. Obamacare is dividing patients and doctors, hospitals and government regulators, workers and employers, constituents and politicians. And here, as elsewhere, many are confused about the law's provisions.

A nationwide Reuters/Ipsos survey shows 49 percent of registered voters favor it, and 51 percent oppose it. At the same time, many who disagree with the legislation support key provisions such as cutting drug costs for seniors, expanding Medicaid coverage for the poor, and banning insurance companies from capping lifetime reimbursements or refusing coverage for preexisting conditions.

Beloit's Community Healthcare Center, where Givhan was picking up a prescription on a recent morning, is tucked in a corner of a shopping mall. It is a tidy place with comfy chairs and wall-to-wall carpeting. Helpful receptionists nod sympathetically behind a glass window. Brochures promote vegetables in your diet.

But the small public clinic is also a place where mounting rage against the machine of American healthcare is palpable. A quarter of the patients lack health insurance. Others are in life-or-death struggles with their insurance companies. Some can't find a surgeon who will take Medicaid.

The Affordable Care Act is expected to cut the number of uninsured Americans by 30 million over the next decade. Lynn Larsen, a clinic administrator, is eager for the law to remain in place.

"Most of our patients are working poor," she said. "Some have 32-hour-a-week jobs at Wal-Mart and can't afford insurance. Others were laid off from factories - their unemployment insurance has run out and they've lost their homes."

The community center, with two family physicians, three registered nurses and a handful of support staff, has no beds. Seriously ill patients are referred to Beloit Memorial Hospital. "But try to find an oncologist who takes an uninsured person," Larsen said. "They want 50 percent up front, and treatment can cost $500,000. If someone has lung cancer and needs charity, they're probably going to die."

SLOW RECOVERY

In Beloit, a city of 37,000, industry has been shrinking for decades. Shuttered hulks of century-old brick factories, some with broken windows, line the Rock River. On a recent evening a homeless man tended three fishing rods, and pulled out a wriggling sheepshead for his dinner.

The city has fought blight by preserving its historic downtown, building a sculpture-adorned bike path and fostering a farmer's market. The economy is slowly recovering, but unemployment remains high, at 9.9 percent. That's down from 19.1 percent in 2009 after a General Motors plant in nearby Janesville closed.

In a Reuters/Ipsos poll, 55 percent of Americans "strongly agree" with the statement "All Americans have a right to healthcare." Another 21 percent "somewhat agree," and only 10 percent express any disagreement.

With a 130-bed hospital, a $520 million budget and a staff of 1,400, Beloit Health System is the largest employer in town. Its administrators are divided over Obamacare, anticipating reforms with a mixture of hope and dread.

Senior Vice President Timothy McKevett said the law's incentives spurred the hospital to set up an electronic records network. "We had three computer systems which didn't talk to each other," he said.

Under Obamacare, "regional information exchanges will allow a doctor anywhere in the state to see, ?Oh, that patient had a lab test two weeks ago. We don't need to do it again.'"

However, McKevett said the Affordable Care Act will cost the hospital $22 million over 10 years. Even before the law was enacted, Medicare and Medicaid paid less than a quarter of hospital or physician costs for treating recipients. "When we see these patients, we lose money," he said.

Under Obamacare, more Beloiters would be covered by Medicaid, and new efficiency rules for Medicare will take effect. For example, hospitals can be denied reimbursement for some patients who are readmitted after previous stays. Doctors object because patients are often readmitted when they fail to follow instructions, rather than because of hospital negligence.

The hospital has been taking steps to cut costs. By merging with a local doctors group and eliminating duplicative CT-scanners and labs, it is saving $3.4 million a year. But with Obamacare, McKevett said, "We will have to do even more with less."

'THE SYSTEM IS COLLAPSING'

Emergency room doctor Richard Barney, who serves as Beloit Memorial's chief of staff, flatly opposes the law. "We can't afford to provide healthcare to millions more people," he said. "We already have a physician shortage. Not everyone should be able to have a knee replacement because their knee hurts."

Given low reimbursements for private physicians, he said, "Sprained ankles and strep throats end up in our overwhelmed ERs where federal law prohibits enforcing copays. You bill till you are blue in the face, but they're not going to pay a dime. We are the only industry in the world where you can dine and dash."

Barney acknowledges that something must be done: "Healthcare costs are out of control. The system is collapsing before our eyes." He favors parts of Obamacare, including the ban on denying coverage for preexisting conditions and lifting the lifetime coverage cap.

But instead of this "monstrosity of a law," he said, the system should "be fixed piece by piece." Barney is upset that the law fails to curb malpractice suits, which fuel expensive and unnecessary tests. "Billions are spent on defensive medicine, and nobody gives a crap because they're in the back pocket of lawyers," he said.

In the campaign, Democratic ads have mostly avoided the subject of Obamacare, focusing instead on attacking GOP plans to reform Medicare. Republicans and business-funded groups, who launched fierce attacks against Obamacare in the 2010 midterm elections, have continued to use it as campaign fodder.

In one spot, GOP Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan, whose congressional district adjoins Beloit, advises, "You should be in charge of your health, not government or insurance bureaucrats."

A Romney ad criticizes Obama for "taxing wheelchairs and pacemakers" and "raiding $716 billion from Medicare" to pay for the program. The Medicare figure, though, is the amount expected to be saved from hospital and doctors' costs under new regulations and does not involve cutting seniors' benefits.

According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the law's $938 billion cost over 10 years would be funded by wringing waste from Medicare and Medicaid, along with new levies, such as a tax on generous "Cadillac" insurance plans. The CBO estimates the law would cut the national deficit by $124 billion over a decade.

Several of Obamacare's major provisions do not take effect until 2014, but the ones in place are having an impact. Fairbanks Morse Engine, which employs 370 workers, is among Beloit companies forced to lift a million-dollar lifetime cap for health insurance spending. Several employees with cancer have benefited.

INFORMATION GAP

At the city's Bushel & Peck's market, cashier Kat Tow, 23, is now covered by her father's health insurance plan, thanks to the law's ban on companies cutting off children before age 26. Her boyfriend, who has a seasonal job with the city parks, also gets insurance through his parents.

"Obamacare is a godsend," she said.

At the community health center, Johnson Moore, 58, is among the clinic's 5,000 uninsured patients to be affected once the law is fully implemented. Filling out forms on a recent morning, Moore said he has never had insurance, public or private. Since the bakery where he worked went out of business, he has been unable to afford his diabetes medicine.

"It is slowly killing me," he said.

A few seats away, Wanda Taylor, a former restaurant manager, is also counting on the law. Her son Colin, 18, a hemophiliac, will age out of the Medicaid system next year. "It scares me half to death," she said. "Even if he gets a job, he probably won't get health insurance. Most people his age don't."

Neither Moore nor Givhan, the former IT specialist, has been able to get Badgercare, the state's Medicaid program, which is largely reserved for mothers and children. Wisconsin, under Republican Governor Scott Walker, has joined a dozen other states in tightening access to benefits.

Obamacare would move in the opposite direction, adding as many as 11 million to Medicaid, including 170,000 in Wisconsin. Anyone earning up to 133 percent of the poverty line would be covered.

Walker, who beat back a union-sponsored recall election in June, contends Obamacare "would require the majority of people in Wisconsin to pay more money for less healthcare."

He returned $38 million in federal funds allocated to Wisconsin for setting up insurance exchanges under the law, saying he hopes it will be repealed. The exchanges, which would give the state's half-million uninsured a central place to compare and buy plans, are to take effect in 2014.

Ignorance of the law's benefits is widespread. Among two dozen Beloiters interviewed during a recent visit, few could name even a single Obamacare provision. None were aware that, under the law, nearly 2 million Wisconsonites have been able to get free preventive services such as mammograms and colonoscopies with no copays.

None were aware that the law has saved Wisconsin Medicare recipients $84 million on prescription drugs since 2010; or that insurance companies are now banned from dropping people when they get sick; or that Wisconsonites got $10.4 million in insurance refunds because companies must now spend 80 percent of healthcare premiums on care.

"What does Obamacare do?" asked Jennifer Lorenz, a nurse at Beloit Memorial Hospital, genuinely puzzled. "I don't know the specifics." An Obama supporter, she was nonetheless unsure if she favors the law.

A few Beloiters were aware that Obamacare would require all Americans to have insurance - the so-called individual mandate. In the Reuters/Ipsos national survey, when questions detailing the law's specifics were posed, that so-called individual mandate was the only provision with less than majority backing. Asked about "requiring all U.S. residents to own health insurance," 40 percent agreed, 36 percent disagreed and 23 percent were undecided.

None of the Beloiters interviewed were aware that the law would offer subsidies for purchasing insurance to those with incomes between 133 percent and 400 percent of the poverty level.

'A SICK-CARE SYSTEM'

At his apple stand in Beloit's Saturday farmer's market, Brian Van Laar said he opposes Obamacare. "I don't think the government should get more involved in healthcare," he said. "The constitution doesn't say it should."

Van Laar, whose orchard is a side business, has a day job as an engineer for an appliance manufacturer. With the new law ensuring coverage to individuals through insurance exchanges, "People at work are worried that the company will stop offering benefits," he said. "They'll just kick us over to Obamacare and say, ?You're on your own.'"

Under the law, employers who cancel their plans would be liable for penalties. Nonetheless, Jeffrey Klett, a Beloit agent who handles benefits for 70 companies, said, "I have two larger clients thinking about doing away with health insurance altogether. Clients ask, ?Am I better off just paying the fine?' There's a lot of uncertainty."

John Bottorff, vice president for human resources at Fairbanks Morse Engine, predicts that "most employers will want to continue to provide healthcare coverage. If you drop it, you could be at a competitive disadvantage in attracting and retaining employees."

In the Reuters/Ipsos survey, 72 percent of voters favored the Obamacare provision that requires companies with more than 50 employees to offer health insurance. Only 28 percent were opposed.

Despite the ambivalence of his colleagues, Larry Bergen, director of Quality Reporting and Community Health at the hospital, calls Obamacare "a fabulous step in the right direction. More people will have insurance, so they won't put off seeing doctors until they have a crisis."

Bergen would have preferred a "single payer system" such as Medicare, rather than a law that relies primarily on private insurance companies. "People say the Canadian and British systems have flaws, but those countries have better life expectancy and less infant mortality than we do," he said.

"We don't have a healthcare system - we have a sick-care system. Fifty percent of health dollars are spent on the sickest 5 percent. If you're sick, we do great things, like an angioplasty in the middle of a heart attack. But people can't get in to see a primary care doctor."

Proponents of the law expect millions more to get treatment for high blood pressure to avoid a stroke, take cholesterol-lowering drugs to ward off a heart attack or get early diabetes intervention to prevent a gangrenous foot amputation.

"People can criticize the law, and we'll have a chance over the years to make it better," said Timothy Cullen, a former Blue Cross executive who represents Beloit in the state senate. Presidents have tried for a century to get healthcare for all Americans, he added. "They all failed and Obama succeeded. It's long overdue."

Opening Reception for the Exhibit Attorney Shores' Scrapbook

Newspaper headline from Shores' scrapbook

The Birmingham Historical Society and the Birmingham Public Library is showcasing the life and times of Birmingham civil rights attorney Arthur Shores in a special exhibit, November 4-December 28 at the Central Library. The exhibit features a scrapbook of newspaper reports and printed materials, which Shores collected throughout his legal and political career.

The Birmingham Historical Society has copied numerous pages of the scrapbook, which is larger than the size of a newspaper, in order to display them in Central Library's 4th Floor Gallery. Shores, who was born in 1904, was a high school principal at Dunbar High School in Bessemer, Alabama, when he became a lawyer in 1937. Although Shores died in 1996 at the age of 92, the scrapbook and exhibit look at his career from 1939 to 1975.

Some of the exhibit highlights include:

  • How Shores and Thurgood Marshall successfully fought to get Autherine Lucy enrolled as the first black student at the University of Alabama in 1956
  • How Shores became the first black person to sit on the Birmingham City Council in 1968
  • How Shores fought to strike down a Birmingham zoning law, which determined which side of Center Street black people could live. (Black people could not live on the west side of the street. The zoning law was struck down in 1946. Once people started moving to the west side of the street, their homes were bombed. Shores moved his family to an east corner of Center Street in 1953.)
  • How Shores' Birmingham home, which was located in an area that was known as "Dynamite Hill'' because of so many racist bombings, was bombed twice in 1963 because racists thought he was involved in an effort to integrate Birmingham schools that year
  • Ads, telegrams, and memorabilia from Shores' career

"This is real history. These are real documents,'' says Marjorie White, director of the Birmingham Historical Society, of the exhibit and scrapbook. "It's like you were there.''

"The exhibit will be fascinating. There's a lot to read, which library visitors will enjoy.''

An opening reception for the exhibit will be held on November 4 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Remarks will be made at 3:30 p.m. A gallery guide and timeline are available at the exhibit and at http://www.bhistorical.org/pdf/BHS_Newsletter_1112.pdf .

Shores' daughters, Helen Shores Lee and Barbara Sylvia Shores, have written a book about their father. During the November 4 opening reception, they will sign copies of The Gentle Giant of Dynamite Hill: The Untold Story of Arthur D. Shores and His Family's Fight for Civil Rights. They wrote the book with Denise George. Helen Shores Lee is a Jefferson County circuit judge and Barbara Sylvia Shores is director of the Jefferson County Office of Senior Citizens Services. Both say they are humbled that an exhibit features their father, who fought for voting rights, housing issues, educational opportunities and more.

"I'm sure if he were here, he'd be very pleased that there is a recognition of his work,'' says Helen Shores Lee.

During his career, Shores kept newspaper articles about his career in a small scrapbook and suitcase. One day while home from graduate school at the University of Illinois in 1968, Barbara Sylvia Shores took her father's collection and put everything in a huge scrapbook. She had the pages laminated. Today, the scrapbook has 256 pages and includes 170 photographs.

She says she did it so she'd have something to share with her children and their children. "It's a little history book,'' says Barbara Sylvia Shores.

The official name of the exhibit is Attorney Shores' Scrapbook: The Life and Times of Birmingham's Civil Rights Lawyer and Civic Leader, 1939-1975.

iPad Mini teardown reveals giant battery, tiny screws

1 day

iFixit, a site that shows you how to fix your gadgets, has torn apart one of Apple's new iPad Mini tablets to see how it's assembled. Surprise: It's basically a giant battery. (This isn't a surprise.)

A large, single-cell battery takes up most of the space behind the tablet's 7.9-inch screen, similar to most other modern gadgets, especially those without swappable batteries. While the size of the processor, radios, and other pieces that make up gadgets have continued to be shrunk by clever engineers and improvements in manufacturing processes, batteries are still ruled by the maxim "the bigger, the better."

iFixit gives a thumbs-up to Apple for keeping the iPad Mini's Samsung-made?LCD panel separate from the protective glass that sits atop, as it makes it less expensive to repair if the glass (but not the screen) is damaged. On the other hand, panels that are bonded to the glass, like those in the iPhone 5, are thinner and marginally more "vibrant," as the pixels are closer to the eye. It should be assumed in the endless pursuit of shrinking sizes, the iPad Mini's display will be bonded like the iPhone 5 display within a generation or two.

Some of the connectors have gotten smaller in the iPad Mini, as well; iFixit called the iPad mini's internal screws the "some of the smallest screws we've ever seen."

Stella & Dot - A Home-Based Business Opportunity for Style ...

By Holly Reisem Hanna

Recently I wrote an article on the Best Products to Sell from Home, and since writing this article, I?ve had numerous emails and comments on why I didn?t include certain companies on my list.

The first reason is there are just too many direct sales companies for me to include everyone. Secondly, I chose a lot of companies that piqued my interest, so the list tends to be a little heavy on the fashion and style niche, but this is where my passion lies.

Point being the direct sales route is a terrific way to go if you want to start your own business, but you really need to have a passion and interest in the products that you?re selling. If you don?t have that passion and love for what you?re selling ? you?re not going to do very well.

So, I wanted to tell you about one of the direct sales companies that I?ve actually thought about joining, Stella & Dot.

I first learned of Stella & Dot four years ago. A friend of a friend had just started selling it and informed me on it, so that I can include it in my research for the website that I was going to launch. I immediately fell in love with their jewelry!

Fast forward a couple of years? I had already launched The Work at Home Woman, and I was connecting with lots of women both locally and nationally. It was at this time that I connected with Tracy Bennett, a Stella & Dot Stylist. She reached out to me and asked if I?d be interested in hosting a show for her. I normally don?t agree to this sort of thing, especially for individuals that I don?t know very well, but I loved Stella & Dot?s products, so I agreed to host the trunk show.

Everyone at my party loved the jewelry, even my mom, who typically doesn?t splurge on fashion accessories. It was after this party that I started looking more in depth into the Stella & Dot business opportunity.

What is Stella & Dot?

Stella & Dot is a direct sales company that sells boutique-style jewelry and accessories exclusively through in-home Trunk Shows by Independent Stylists. The one of a kind collections are designed by New York designers and have been featured in Gossip Girl, In Style and Lucky Magazine as well as on the wrists and necklines of today?s hottest celebrities.

The Stella & Dot business opportunity?

  • Individuals can start a Stella & Dot business by purchasing a starter kit for $199, which includes $350 in jewelry samples of their choice, professional business supplies such as Look Books, order forms and more. Additional jewelry samples can be purchased at 50% off. The average Stylist spends about $800 upfront to start her business and receives extensive training.
  • The average trunk show is just over $1,000 in sales, earning the Stylist between $250 and $300 per 90 minute party.
  • Stylists earn 25-30% in commissions on core products, plus they can earn free business supplies and additional jewelry samples each month.
  • Stylists can earn trips and prizes based on sales achievements such as a trip for two to exotic destinations, free jewelry and more.

Here?s Jessica Herrin, CEO and Founder of Stella & Dot to tell you more?

So what are my thoughts on Stella & Dot? I?m already a fan and purchaser of the products, but what I like about this company is the extensive training and community that they offer their Stylists. Another aspect that I like is, it seems like it would be easy to sell in everyday life ? meaning that you can simply wear the jewelry out and about, and when someone asks about it, you can give them your stylist business card. If I didn?t already have a job that I truly loved, this is one opportunity that I would consider getting into.

If you would like more information on this home-based business opportunity, please see Stella & Dot?s website.

LIVING WILL FORM

I, __________, being of sound mind and body, do not wish to be kept alive indefinitely by artificial means. Under no circumstances should my fate be put in the hands of pinhead partisan politicians who couldn't pass ninth-grade biology if their lives depended on it, or lawyers/ doctors/ hospitals interested in simply running up the bills.

If after a reasonable amount of time passes, and I fail to ask for: (Check appropriate items): a Martini___, a Margarita___, a Scotch and soda___, a Bloody Mary___, a beer___, a Gin and Tonic___, a Glass of Chardonnay___, a Steak___, Lobster or crab legs___, the TV remote control___, a bowl of ice cream___, the sports page___, Sex___, or Chocolate___, it should be presumed that I won't ever get any better. When such a determination is reached, I hereby instruct my appointed person and attending physicians to pull the plug, reel in the tubes, and call it a day. At this point, it is time to call the New Orleans Jazz Funeral Band to come and do their thing at my funeral, and ask all of my friends to raise their glasses to toast the good times we have had, and others we should have had.

P.S.: I hear that in Ireland there is a Nursing Home with a Pub. The patients are happier, and they have a lot more visitors. Some of them don't even need embalming when their time comes. If anyone knows the name of this happy place, PLEASE pass it on.

Amendment #1:
Should I become incapacitated as described above, DO NOT PULL THE PLUG until after I have voted against Barack Obama by absentee ballot in the November 2012 election.

Amendment #2:
If the plug has been pulled in violation of #1 above, transport my body to Chicago so I can still vote against Barack Obama.

Science-Based Medicine ? CAM and Creationism: Separated at Birth?

Over the past weekend, I had the opportunity to attend CSICon in Nashville, Tennessee. The Committee for Skeptical Inquiry (?CSI?) combats all sorts of pseudoscience, including creationism/creation science/intelligent design and alternative/complementary/integrative medicine. Our own Team SBM was ably represented by Harriet Hall, David Gorski and Kimball Atwood, whose presentation highlighted the credulous acceptance of CAM in some medical schools, and by Steve Novella, who gave a talk on the placebo effect and its exploitation by CAM proponents. Among many other presentations were those on the Mayan calendar and the end of the world,?unmasking of (supposedly) paranormal events, and the neurobiology of memory. Pseudoscience was given a well-deserved thrashing by rational minds.

On Saturday, I once again had the pleasure of hearing Eugenie Scott ,Ph.D., the virtually one-woman anti-creationism campaign who founded and heads the National Center for Science Education (NCSE). As I listened to her talk I couldn?t help but being struck by a number of similarities in the weaknesses apparent in arguments for creationism/ creation science/intelligent design (or ?ID?)and those for alternative/complementary/integrative medicine (or ?CAM?). I doubt the two groups like to think of themselves as ideological twins, but gosh, they sure do look alike.

CAM and creationism

Of course, CAM is not monolithic. I imagine some of those who promote CAM diagnostic methods and treatments would be perfectly happy being associated with Intelligent Design or any of its previous iterations, such as creationism. After all, if you think all interpretations of how the world works are equally valid you are not likely to quibble with the idea that God created the earth in 6 days any more than you would argue with acupuncture?s meridians and qi. And some CAM providers are so deficient in scientific training we can well imagine they might view the creation of man from clay as a plausible explanation of human evolution. On the other hand, if you are in, say, academic medicine, you would likely bristle at the idea that you have anything in common with an ID proponent. Even some of those in the Health Care Freedom movement, who endorse the concept that all treatments, no matter how implausible or ineffective, should be available to anyone who wants them, would probably draw the line at the notion that their arguments are no better than those which supposedly support ID.

ID, on the other hand, is exclusively a fundamentalist Christian concept, although with variations within that single ideology. (Mainstream Christianity does not reject evolution as an explanation for the origins of life.) As explained on the NCSE website, which I highly recommend, there are several types of anti-evolution creationists with differing points of view. (Below is but a rough summary and may somewhat conflate the various subtypes in the interest of brevity.)

Originally, anti-evolution creationists argued that the Bible is the inerrant word of God. Thus, if the Bible says that God created the sun, moon and stars on day four of creation, then that is exactly what happened. That was fine as long as those views were confined to religious settings. But the creationists wanted to go further by banning the teaching of evolution and teaching creationism in public schools. Here they ran into trouble in the form of the First Amendment and courts consistently held that creationism is religion, not science, and could not be taught in science classes. The creationists regrouped and invented ?creation science,? which argued that the creation story is actually supported by good science. That didn?t fly as an end-run around the Constitution so they came up with Intelligent Design, which attempts to expurgate creationism of all religious language. ID argues, as the name suggests, that science supports the existence of an Intelligent Designer (code for God) and that Darwinian evolution (which is, after all, ?just a theory?) is full of holes so, by default, ID correctly explains the origin of life.

It is my impression that CAM concepts such as vitalism will pass muster with IDers as long as the ?life force? underlying it is understood as God. I know anecdotally of Christian chiropractors who claim that what was originally known in chiropractic as ?Innate Intelligence? is actually God at work. However, to the extent that any CAM is inconsistent with Christian theology it cannot be accepted because of the exclusivity of Christian principles. Thus one cannot accept both that qi and meridians exist if one is loyal to Christianity. Although not an example from fundamentalist Christianity, this inconsistency with Christian doctrine is why reiki was condemned as a belief in the supernatural by the U.S.?Conference of Catholic Bishops in 2009.

I find there are remarkable parallels between the logical fallacies and sub-par?thinking?committed in typical?arguments made in favor of CAM and those in favor of ID. So if you are offended by the lack of good science behind one it is hard to be logically consistent in supporting the other. Let?s look at my list, which I set out with brief comments. Perhaps you can think of others.

Argument from antiquity

One of the well-worn arguments in favor of acupuncture is that it has been used for 2000 years (or 5000 years or ?thousands of years?) so there ?must be something to it.? (Actually, the acupuncture of today dates from the middle of the last century.) A similar argument is made for Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (which incorporates acupuncture) and herbal medicine. As David Gorski pointed out in his talk at CSICon, this argument from antiquity could be made for humoural medicine, the concept that bodily function is governed by the four humours and the source of the ?science? behind bloodletting. Fortunately, it?s one ancient therapy that didn?t survive.

The Christian fundamentalist theology behind creationism also relies on the Bible?s antiquity as support for its inerrancy. When they sing ?that ole time religion . . . is good enough for me,? they really mean ?ole.? This is no more persuasive than the antiquity (real or invented) behind CAM diagnostic methods and treatments. There is nothing wrong, of course, with ancient peoples attempting to interpret their world as best they could with the tools at hand, but their views of biology and physiology should no longer hold sway when surpassed by scientific discovery.

Argument from ignorance

As Irish comedian and CAM critic Dara O?Briain famously said:

Science knows it doesn?t know everything; otherwise, it?d stop. But just because science doesn?t know everything doesn?t mean you can fill in the gaps with whatever fairy tale most appeals to you.

NCSE echoes this thought in discussing ID:

ID has been called an argument from ignorance, as it relies upon a lack of knowledge for its conclusion: Lacking a natural explanation, we assume intelligent cause. Most scientists would reply that unexplained is not unexplainable, and that ?we don?t know yet? is a more appropriate response than invoking a cause outside of science.

Bad science

What we might collectively (and colloquially) refer to as ?bad science? is the sine qua non of CAM. Without bad science CAM cannot exist and thus we find it across the full spectrum of CAM promotion. Whether cherry-picking the evidence,?tooth fairy?science, lack of plausibility, making inappropriate conclusions from studies, or other insufficiently rigorous methodology, bad science can be found at all levels of CAM. At the lower reaches, go to any CAM organization or practitioner website and I defy you to find a complete explication of the scientific evidence for or against a CAM treatment (that is, real CAM, not treatments rebranded as CAM.) At the higher levels of CAM apologists and promoters, such as NCCAM, hospitals, medical organizations and otherwise respectable medical schools, you?ll find plenty of examples of bad science harnessed in the service of CAM.

While I do not understand evolutionary biology (or any kind of biology for that matter) well enough to list the many examples of bad science in ID, fortunately Eugenie Scott does. An article she and Nicholas J. Matzke authored and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (2007) gives a brief explanation and supplies references to scholarly critiques of ID and its predecessors. Those criticisms were brought to bear on ID in the landmark case Kitzmiller v. Dover, in which?a federal?district court judge found that?ID was simply a form of creationism and its teaching in public schools a violation of the First Amendment.

(As an aside, I have often wished for a similar opportunity to put CAM, or any of its iterations, on trial. Unfortunately, there is no constitutional prohibition against bad science. Perhaps there should be.)

Keeping an open mind

Although years of research have failed to uncover a single CAM treatment that is better than placebo, proponents claim that we should ?keep an open mind.? As David Gorski pointed out in his CSICon presentation on CAM in medical schools, it?s not a good idea to keep one?s mind open to the extent that one?s brains fall out.

Likewise, ID proponents attempt to dress up teaching the pseudoscience of ID in the classroom as ?teaching the controversy? and an issue of ?academic freedom:?

Although in the 1990s IDC [Intelligent Design/Creationism] advocates had encouraged the teaching of ID in public school science classes as an alternative to evolution, in the early 2000s they shifted their strategy. IDCs currently concentrate their efforts on attacking evolution. Under innocuous-sounding guises such as ?academic freedom,? ?critical analysis of evolution,? or ?teaching the strengths and weaknesses of evolution,? IDCs attempt to encourage teachers to teach students wrongly that there is a ?controversy? among scientists over whether evolution has occurred. So-called ?evidence against evolution? or ?weaknesses of evolution? consist of the same sorts of long-discredited arguments against evolution which have been a staple of creationism since the 1920s and earlier.

Moving the goalposts

Steve Novella?s CSICon presentation on the placebo effect noted that originally CAM proponents claimed they would show that CAM treatments had real physiological effects. But after a billion or so dollars of taxpayer funded research that didn?t pan out so they switched claims. Now they are ?harnessing the power of the placebo? and physiological effects have been exchanged for ?healing? (whatever that means).

Likewise, creationists originally sought to ban the teaching of evolution in public schools. They succeeded early in the last century, hence the Scopes trial in the 1920s, in which a teacher was convicted of defying the Tennessee ban on teaching evolution. However, when a series of federal court cases decided that creationism was pure religion, not science, tactics shifted to teaching creationism, later rebranded as ID, along with the science of evolution. When ID was exposed as creationism, the tactics shifted again to the ?academic freedom? argument mentioned above.

Legislative alchemy

If science doesn?t support you, make sure the state legislature does. In a process I call ?legislative alchemy? implausible and unproven treatments such as subluxation-based chiropractic, homeopathy and acupuncture are transformed into licensed health care practices.

IDers use the same approach. As mentioned, early on they were able to simply ban the teaching of evolution. Now, they take a different tack in the form of so-called academic freedom laws.

There are two main strains of ?academic freedom? bills. The first mandates that teachers be able to discuss ?the full range of scientific views regarding biological and chemical evolution,? and offers students ?protection for subscribing to a particular position on views regarding biological or chemical evolution.? Bills of this strain typically also include unsubstantiated claims of widespread persecution of teachers and students who criticize evolution. The Discovery Institute?s ?Model Academic Freedom Statute on Evolution? is of this form.

The second strain does not purport to be concerned with student rights, and cites the need to help students develop ?critical thinking skills? on ?controversial issues.? To this end, it permits teachers to discuss ?the scientific strengths and scientific weaknesses of existing scientific theories.? The listed ?theories? often cover several topics of concern to the religious right: primarily evolution and abiogenesis, but also global warming, human cloning and stem cell research. One example of this strain is 2008?s Louisiana Science Education Act.

From 2004 to spring 2011, at least forty such bills have been filed in 13 states.

To date, these bills have become law in Louisiana and Tennessee.

Conclusion

So where does all of this get us? I do not argue that if one believes that CAM should be a part of medicine in particular or health care in general then one necessarily believes in ID, or vice versa. But I do believe that the arguments for CAM are based on the same logical fallacies and fuzzy thinking that the ID movement uses. And if the thought that their arguments are cut from the same cloth as creationists makes CAM proponents queasy then perhaps it is time they reexamine their beliefs.

What now, what's next? - Love Forum - Online Relationship Discussion

Hello boys and girls, I'm gonna sum down the story for you to help me out with tips and such so I can find a solution.

It's like this, I've had problems with drugs for almost 10 years (mostly weed).. This was my way to escape reality and push my feelings, bagage, emotional thoughts away from me to not feel depressed or sometimes not feel anything at all... Kinda numb state!

At this point I was going on and off if I should stop smoking and such to grab my life back and take controll... That's when she came, straight out of nowhere with open arms..

We had been together 5 years and back then I was in the same state I've been now, but younger and much more immature. But she fell for me again!

Anyways, she told me she loved me kinda right away, and after 2? weeks of dating she moved into my apartment. This was fatal attraction nothing else could make us feel better.

Before this she had been in a 5 year relationship with a guy who diden't treat her right at all and she had wanted to break up for quite some time... She had to leave all her stuff for him to take over just to get rid of him...I helped her with this and she finally left him to be with me. Everything was great and I was full of life and love.

During the time spent together, she was trying to break my wall to connect with my deepest emotions and inner levels. Sad but true, I've been hurt by another girl a long time ago and had a hard time trusting girls in general..

Now 6 mounths later, she finally broke my wall, after having me acting jelous, insecure, rude and all thoose things... She got me to stop smoking pot and made me reconnect with my feelings in the deepest way that I haven't felt for over 10 years.

But somewhere along the way, she lost herself and the attraction / sparks she had for me...We never brought this up during the time spent and I diden't realise anything of this since she wasen't telling me and I was constantly in my bubble.. Puttin her on 2nd place, struggling for smoke hole day and such.. So since 5-6 weeks ( during the time I got clean) She started hanging out with friends more then haging out with me, went out 14:00 came home 04:00 in the night, etc etc... As time passed I got more and more depressed.

Was home crying wondering where she was, stayed up confused wondering when she was gonna come home. Got jelous on her for not inviting me into her company or when she was with other guys (old friends). I even promised I would let her take her time to heal and think about what was wrong to get back to love life we we're living, but kept bringing the problem up after 2-3 days period cuz I was feeling so depressed and got no response on my love.

Finally I got to a boiling point one night where I said I've had enough. I can't take this anymore.. I wan't response on my love and I don't wanna feel depressed knowing she doesn't wanna spend time with me...
Doing so, I suggested we took a break. Moving apart and take time to heal etc etc...

In her eyes, this was the same thing as breaking up and I felt that there was nothing left to do so I agreed...For the greater good we said...

Week later, haden't talked at all, I contacted her and it was all good...She told me she loved me and missed me but diden't want us to talk like that now that we've broken up and that we gota accept and move on... 2 days after the schock came, I realised she wasen't mine anymore and that I actually had to accept this fact which made me a nerve wreck.

Started texting her, calling her.. All thoose misstakes you should not do when the break up is done... Now its been 1? weeks since we broke up, but I've been depressed for alost 6-7 weeks ever since it all started and she
took distance etc..

This made me read alot online about relationships and different of psycological theories on how the womens mind work and how I've proberly hurt her emotions etc.. Made me realise that I have to accept the fact that we broke up and the old relationship is more or less dead by now.. Tho I've wanted to meet her to talk with her.. She's been kinda "busy" but today I finally got to meet with her again and I was playing it all cool, calm and collected.

Diden't talk about anything that had to do with the past or whos shes meeting or anything in thoose terms at all. I kept it all in the light, and made her relive old memories and was fun and spontainious about everything. Got her to smile several times and she was laughing and we we're having a good time in general...

Now what I wonder is, what should I do next? Is she seeing me as a friend and a friend only, or is she spending time with me to feed of my emotions to heal herself or what is going on?

Shud I be to one to initiate contact with her or shud I try the "no contact" rule to see if she contacts me or what should I do?

I'm very confused and I really want her back and start all fresh again!

Gingrich: Akin win could rebuke GOP establishment

(AP) ? Still mourning the death of her mother, Democratic Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill returned to campaigning Wednesday as Republican challenger Todd Akin gained a dual boost from a former presidential hopeful and a political group that had aided one his rivals in the GOP primary.

Former Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich led a rally for Akin in Kansas City, urging supporters to send a powerful signal to "the moneyed Republican establishment" that ? led by GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney ? abandoned Akin after an August remark about "legitimate rape."

Yet there were fresh signs that Akin was regaining GOP support. The Now or Never Political Action Committee, which backed an Akin rival in the GOP primary, announced Wednesday that it was buying $800,000 of TV ads urging Romney supporters to also vote for Akin on Tuesday.

Missouri polls have consistently shown Romney leading Democratic President Barack Obama, who narrowly lost the state four years ago. Some polls also have shown a tightened Missouri Senate race, as Akin has attempted to rebound from an Aug. 19 TV interview in which he said women's bodies have ways of avoiding pregnancy after "legitimate rape."

McCaskil had canceled most of her campaign events during the past week to spend time with her ailing mother, who died Monday. She returned to campaigning Wednesday with an event outside a St. Louis County elementary school.

"This has been a tumultuous time in my life, obviously," said McCaskill, her voice seeming to break. "And part of me is a little lost. This is the first time I've walked out my house in the morning, campaigning, where I haven't had a chance to say, 'Mom, I'm out there. I'm going.' And she hasn't given me the, 'I wish I could go. Go get them.' So that's hard for me. She's been a huge part of my life in so many ways."

McCaskill used the school setting to criticize Akin's opposition to the federally funded school lunch program, which began during the administration of President Harry Truman, a Missouri native. Akin has suggested states could better handle the program.

"This is a program that should not be a place that candidates for the United States Senate differ, but we do. And that should remind Missourians how extreme Todd Akin is," McCaskill said.

At the rally in Kansas City, Akin suggested it is McCaskill who was out of touch with most Missourians in supporting Obama's federal stimulus act and health care law. He noted that 71 percent of Missouri voters approved a 2010 ballot measure rejecting a key provision in the health care law.

Akin also emphasized that low-income housing firms affiliated with McCaskill's husband, Joseph Shepard, have received tens of millions of dollars of federal subsidies. That's "your taxpayer dollars that are going to her family business," Akin said Wednesday.

Cheers mixed with jeers as Akin and Gringrich spoke at Kansas City's historic Union Station to a crowd that included about 100 supporters and nearly as many protesters, many carrying signs that referenced Akin's "legitimate rape" remark. The event highlighted the intensity of a campaign that has remained in the national spotlight and could help determine party control of the U.S. Senate.

Republicans need a net gain of four Senate seats in Tuesday's election ? or just three, if Romney defeats Obama and gives a GOP vice president the power to break tie votes in the Senate ? to retake the chamber's majority from Democrats.

"No single Senate race in the country will send a more powerful signal than the election of Todd Akin," Gingrich said at the rally, first noting the potential for Republican control of the chamber. But Gingrich said there was an equally strong point to be made within the GOP.

"There is no other race in the country that will send a bigger signal to the moneyed Republican establishment that it is votes that matter and citizens that matter," Gingrich said to his most enthusiastic applause. "When people of a state make a choice, they deserve to be respected for their right to choose the candidate they want, not the candidate Washington dictates."

Winning the majority was the reason cited by the Now or Never PAC for its new ad. The group had backed Akin rival Sarah Steelman in the Aug. 7 GOP primary.

"Todd Akin may have not been our first choice for Republican nominee in the race to replace Claire McCaskill," said spokesman Tyler Harber. "But congressman Akin plays an important role in securing the Senate chamber."

Among the protesters at Wednesday's rally in Kansas City was Neil Harris, a retired college teacher and McCaskill supporter who held a sign saying, "Todd and Newt (equals) Hypocritical Mass." Harris referred to Akin as "an idiot."

"His 13th century doctrine on women shutting down the possibility of pregnancy after rape seems to be far from reality," Harris said.

Akin supporter Kiley Chaney, a union bricklayer who drove an hour from rural Garden City to attend the rally, acknowledged that Akin had "made some blunders in the campaign." But Chaney said he was more concerned with McCaskill's ties to Obama and the large national debt.

"She's going to be a yes woman for Obama," said Chaney, later adding: "It's not fashionable to be for Akin, but I'm going to vote against McCaskill."
