The M551DN offers USB and Ethernet connectivity. I tested it over an Ethernet connection using a computer running Windows Vista.

Print Speed

I timed the M551DN on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at an effective 9.0 pages per minute (ppm). That's a bit short of our record (9.5 ppm) for a color laser, and a very good speed considering its 33 page-per-minute rated speed for both color and black-and-white printing that?s based on printing text documents without graphics or photos?our test suite includes text pages, graphics pages, and pages with mixed content.

The Editors' Choice Xerox Phaser 6280DN ($649 direct, 4 stars), with a rated speed of 31 pages per minute for monochrome and 26 for color, took more than twice as long to finish the same tests, at an effective 4.5 ppm, while we timed the OKI C610DN ($789 list, 4 stars), rated at 34 pages per minute for monochrome and 32 for color printing, at an effective 6.7 ppm.

Output Quality

The M551DN?s overall output quality is above average, thanks to very good graphics and photo quality. Text quality is typical for a laser, which is to say good enough for any business use short of demanding desktop publishing applications that use very small fonts.

With graphics, colors were bright and looked reasonably true. Some black backgrounds weren?t quite as dark as I would have liked, and some very thin colored lines against black backgrounds could have been sharper, but there were no other issues worth mentioning. The graphics are fine for printing out PowerPoint presentations, and I?d feel comfortable handing the output out to clients or colleagues I was seeking to impress.

Photo quality was slightly above par. Colors looked slightly off in a couple of prints, but most approached true photo quality. Taken together, the text, graphics, and photos should be suitable for simple marketing materials like handouts or trifold brochures, or for real estate handouts showing photos of properties.

Running Costs

The M551DN has reasonably low running costs of 1.8 cents per monochrome page and 13 cents per color page. The HP M551DN offers a winning combination of fast speed, above-par output quality, and a reasonably low cost per page. The OKI C610DN has lower running costs and better paper handling options, but is slower and lags on output quality.

At the end of 2011, the Editors' Choice Xerox Phaser 6280DN was officially discontinued, but remaining stock is still being sold by Xerox and various etailers at a considerable discount. Its output quality, particularly for text, is slightly better than the M551DN. Its running costs, however, are higher than the HP's, both standard and optional paper capacity is lower, and it took twice as long as the M551DN to print out our business applications suite. If output quality is paramount, the 6280DN may be a better choice, but the HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 Color Printer M551DN offers a much better balance between quality, speed, and running costs.?

"The swap deal will strengthen the NBU's ability to support the UAH:USD exchange rate as some Ukrainian-Chinese trade contracts (in 2011, net imports of Chinese goods to Ukraine totaled $4bn) may now be quoted in CNY rather than USD, thus reducing local importers' dollar demand and easing pressure on the F/X rate being targeted by the central bank."

"Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children," said a statement from Cruise's rep on Friday. "Please allow them their privacy."

"This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," Holmes's attorney Jonathan Wolfe told?People magazine. "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

Daughter Suri is 6. Cruise, 49,?and Holmes, 33, wed in?the 15th-century Odescalchi Castle outside of Rome?in 2006. He had proposed at the Eiffel Tower.

Cruise drew media headlines in May 2005 when he declared his love for Holmes and famously jumped on a couch on the set of "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

Early in their courtship, Holmes revealed that Cruise was her first?celebrity crush, and she?started pining away for him in 1983 when she was four years old and saw him in ?Risky Business."

Cruise was married twice before, to actresses Nicole Kidman and Mimi Rogers. It was Holmes' first marriage.

Cruise will turn 50 on July 3.

The loss from JP Morgan?s botched trade could total as much as $9 billion, far higher than the original estimates of the shortfall, according to a report in The New York Times.

JP Morgan?s CEO Jamie Dimon estimated in May that the bank?s losses from the trade, which came as a result of a bad bet on credit derivatives, would be $2 billion, and he estimated that losses could double within the next few quarters.

But the tally of the losses has grown in recent weeks as the bank has unwound its positions, the Times said. The newspaper also said the bank?s exit from its money-losing trade is happening faster than many expected. JP Morgan had previously said it hoped to clear its position by early next year, the Times said.

Dimon has appeared before lawmakers on Capitol Hill in recent weeks to explain the origin of the multibillion-dollar trading loss.

Lawmakers peppered him with questions about regulation and risky practices at the bank, but did not press him to give an update on an estimated $3 billion in trading losses.

New research by home insurer LV= has revealed that in the last few years as many as 4.05m homeowners have undertaken electrical jobs without professional help, 3.3m have attempted plumbing work and 1.35m have carried out structural work such as removing walls. 900,000 have undertaken major building works, such as loft conversions, and 450,000 have tackled potentially dangerous gas repairs.

According to the LV= survey, many homeowners admitted undertaking these works in an attempt to improve the resale value of their homes. However, the effects of doing these jobs badly can reduce the sale price of a property by more than 5% in some cases.

John O?Roarke, managing director of LV= home insurance (http://www.lv.com/insurance/home_insurance/), said: ?With house prices falling or stagnating in some parts of the UK, it?s understandable that many homeowners should try to bump up the value of their properties through DIY home improvements.?

?But although nine out of ten people in our survey (88%) recognised that jobs like gas work should only be left to the professionals, nearly 0.5m Brits are still prepared to give it a go. Not only could bungling these jobs be dangerous, and costly to put right, but if they caused a serious problem with the property it could invalidate the home insurance cover (http://www.lv.com/insurance/home_insurance/tips_advice/houseinsurance).?

The LV= (http://www.lv.com/) report surveyed both homeowners and estate agents, and reveals a myriad of conflicting opinions when it comes to the impact of DIY improvements. 21% of home owners believe that redecorating adds the most value to a house, followed by kitchen refurbishment (14%), garden work (12%), and bathroom replacement (6%).

Meanwhile 69% of estate agents believe decorating will make no difference at all to the asking price of a property. 64% responded that garden landscaping won?t add value; whilst 22% said even a new kitchen won?t improve the price. Estate agents also believe that the sale price of a property could decrease by more than 5% in some cases, if ?improvement? work was done poorly.

Despite popular opinion, estate agents say that some of the most costly jobs are likely to have only a minimal impact on the asking price of a home. Those agents who believe that improvement work usually or always adds value reported that a new kitchen, if done well, can add around 2.5% to the price, while a good new bathroom or garden landscaping can each add 2.2%.

Structural improvements that are done well, such as a good loft conversion, top the added value list and can boost a property?s price by around 8%, however it still doesn?t make good financial sense, as the cost of the work is likely to be higher than the increase in the property?s value.

John O?Roarke concluded: ?Our research shows that the days of being able to buy a property, do it up yourself on the cheap and then sell it on at a profit, are over. DIY home improvements may cut the initial costs, compared with getting the professionals in, but they might not add any value to the property at all. And sloppy work is likely to reduce the resale price and could even invalidate the home insurance cover.?
