PST: Most shocking result? Real Salt Lake

Real Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis can be a pretty intense soul ? and that?s after a win, on a sunny day when all is right in the universe.

So, how?s he feeling about last night?s U.S. Open Cup loss to Minnesota, a quality club, but one that competes in domestic soccer?s second tier?

?I?ve said this once before in my coaching career and I?ll say it know, I would not want to be a player under me right now,? he said.

Yep, there?s a storm a? brewin? in the Great Salt Lake area.

Real?s loss was surely the most shocking among the seven that saw MLS clubs go crashing out in the third round (the round where 16 MLS clubs entered). It wasn?t shocking because Minnesota is bad; the Stars are unbeaten in eight NASL matches.

It was surprising because Kreis fielded a fairly representative team, stocked with as many first-team regulars as injuries and international absences would allow. And is surprising because RSL was at home; in contrast, four of the seven MLS losers were on the road.

In fact, a great crowd of 17,212 showed up at Rio Tinto to see witness the Open Cup carnage.? And, of course, RSL is the top ranked team in most rankings, including ProSoccerTalk?s weekly quality rearrangement.

So ?

We owe an apology to our fans, because that was a tremendous crowd tonight for a U.S. Open Cup match, and we let them down miserably.?

Two quick points, both in fairness and to add context:

First, Kreis wasn?t completely throwing his players under the bus. While lamenting less-than-100 percent effort, he also allowed that the tactics weren?t right. That, of course, is on the coaching staff.

And the comment about working hard in the aftermath wasn?t all about punitive measure; the team now has a 17-day break before its next match. Kreis was also talking generally about working hard during the break.

Blowing in the wind: How hidden flower features are crucial for bees

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

As gardeners get busy filling tubs and borders with colourful bedding plants, scientists at the Universities of Cambridge and Bristol have discovered more about what makes flowers attractive to bees rather than humans. Published today in the British Ecological Society's journal Functional Ecology, their research reveals that Velcro-like cells on plant petals play a crucial role in helping bees grip flowers ? especially when the wind gets up.

The study focuses on special cells found on the surface of petals, whose stunning structure is best seen under an electron microscope. According to lead author, Dr Beverley Glover: "Many of our common garden flowers have beautiful conical cells if you look closely ? roses have rounded conical petal cells while petunias have really long cells, giving petunia flowers an almost velvety appearance, particularly visible in the dark-coloured varieties."

Glover's group previously discovered that when offered snapdragons with conical cells and a mutant variety without these cells, bees prefer the former because the conical cells help them grip the flower. "It's a bit like Velcro, with the bee claws locking into the gaps between the cells," she explains.

Compared with many garden flowers, however, snapdragons have very complicated flowers; bees have to land on a vertical face and pull open a heavy lip to reach the nectar so Glover was not surprised that grip helps. But she wanted to discover how conical cells help bees visiting much simpler flowers.

"Many of our garden flowers like petunias, roses and poppies are very simple saucers with nectar in the bottom, so we wanted to find out why having conical cells to provide grip would be useful for bees landing on these flowers. We hypothesised that maybe the grip helped when the flowers blow in the wind."

Using two types of petunia, one with conical cells and a mutant line with flat cells, Glover let a group of bumblebees that had never seen petunias before forage in a large box containing both types of flower, and discovered they too preferred the conical-celled flowers.

They then devised a way of mimicking the way flowers move in the wind. "We used a lab shaking platform that we normally use to mix liquids, and put the flowers on that. As we increased the speed of shaking, mimicking increased wind speed, the bees increased their preference for the conical-celled flowers," she says.

The results, Glover says, give ecologists a deeper insight into the extraordinarily subtle interaction between plant and pollinator. "Nobody knew what these cells were for, and now we have a good answer that works for pretty much all flowers," she concludes. "It's is too easy to look at flowers from a human perspective, but when you put yourself into the bee's shoes you find hidden features of flowers can be crucial to foraging success."

ASUS MeMO 370T 7-inch tablet clears the FCC, leaves no trace of Ice Cream or Jelly behind

Image

The 7-inch ASUS Eee Pad MeMO ME370T we saw in early prototype form during CES just passed through the FCC. It's still only showing WiFi radios with no trace of a cellular connection, although if it's going to be the $249 standard bearer NVIDIA and ASUS were so excited about, that's to be expected. A juicier rumor that has surfaced in the intervening period however, suggests this device will actually be released as a Google Nexus 7-inch tablet (or just sold from a Google store), and could even feature the next version of Android, codenamed Jelly Bean. It could also sell for as low as $149, although the cheaper reworked version might swap out the Tegra processor for one from Qualcomm. We didn't spot anything in the filings to back that up, but you can paw through the PDFs yourself at the link below, or just get an idea of what it looks like in non-line drawn form with our gallery of pics from CES 2012.

The science of why you love coffee ? Living ? Bangor Daily News ...

A generation ago, most Americans recognized two kinds of coffee: regular and decaf. Now we?re concerned about every last detail ? from the beans? country of origin and whether they are organic, have been shade-grown and traded fairly to the degree of roasting and how much pressure was applied during brewing. Yet for all of this connoisseurism, how much do we understand about the science of coffee?

Get ready to know your joe.

?Coffee?s main attributes are bitterness, acidity and body, also known as mouth-feel,? according to Ronald Pegg, a food science professor at the University of Georgia who teaches an introductory course on coffee. ?The key is to get these three attributes in balance.?

As coffee makes its way from tree to mug, producers must keep this balance in mind. It?s not an easy task, because coffee contains more than 1,000 chemical compounds, according to research by Thomas Hofmann of the Technical University of Munich and Oliver Frank of the University of Muenster.

Consider the first element, the bean. There are 70 species of coffee, but two dominate the market: coffea arabica, the more common variety native to Ethiopia, and coffea canephora, also known as coffea robusta, a more disease-resistant plant. Arabica is almost universally acknowledged as the superior variety, although blends often contain robusta because it?s cheaper and adds a strong bitterness that some coffee drinkers enjoy in small doses.

There are several chemical differences between the two varieties. Arabica has 60 percent more fat than robusta ? and taste-testers typically favor coffee made from beans with more fat. Fat also helps during the production process because it creates a more even roast. Arabica beans also have a higher concentration of sugar.

To understand why a sugary bean makes a better brew, we have to consider roasting.

Freshly picked coffee beans have virtually no flavor. Roasting is what makes coffee palatable. The roasting process triggers a long list of chemical reactions. One is caramelization, the breaking-down of sugar, which contributes to coffee?s brown color. Roasting also creates compounds that contribute to coffee?s unique flavor and aroma, including diacetyl, which adds a butterscotch flavor, and furans, which contribute a nutlike taste.

Roasting also generates what are known as Maillard reactions. Named after the French chemist Louis Camille Maillard, these complex reactions occur when heat is applied to amino acids in the presence of sugars. Like caramelization, they are responsible for browning and for the production of hundreds of chemicals that, in combination, give unique flavors to cooked meats, baked breads, dark beers, toast and coffee. Since arabica beans have about twice as much sugar as the robusta variety, the roasting process generates a fuller and more complex variety of Maillard reactions in them than it does in robusta, making for a more interesting taste in the coffee.

Roasting is a touchy business, though. High heat can also overproduce bitter compounds and ruin the drink. For many years, food scientists believed that caffeine was the main source of bitterness in coffee. While it?s true that pure caffeine has a bitter flavor, it?s present in such low proportions in an average cup of coffee that it contributes only a small amount of flavor.

In fact, coffee bitterness is attributable to a family of chemicals known as chlorogenic acids, which are also present in tea, peaches and prunes. Chlorogenic acids aren?t bitter themselves, but, when roasted, they transform into two related chemicals ? lactones and phenylindanes. Lactones give a pleasant, soft bitterness. Phenylindanes are more powerful and harsh, and are present in higher concentration in dark roasts.

Getting the roast right is still more art than science. Expert coffee roasters must constantly pull sample beans out from the heat to check the color and aroma. These markers are actually proxies for the concentration of lactones and phenylindanes. Food scientists are working on ways to make the process more scientific. One day, perhaps, instead of asking your barista for medium roast or dark roast, you?ll ask for a precise balance of lactones and phenylindanes. (And you thought coffee orders couldn?t get any more complicated.)

Just as there is science to bean selection and roasting, there?s also a little bit of science in brewing and drinking coffee.

How much of the coffee ends up in the cup depends on the brewing method chosen. Percolators and drip machines are extremely inefficient at transferring chemicals from bean to beverage. The final result is only about 1.3 percent coffee; the rest is water. That?s okay if you like a coffee with mild flavor and body, but many find that extraction rate rather weak. French-press (or plunger pot) coffee is similarly mild, but it is high in oil content, providing a body that some drinkers prefer. (French-press enthusiasts should be advised that those oils may elevate cholesterol levels.) On the other end of the spectrum are espresso machines, which force the coffee compounds into the water. Espresso is more than 5 percent coffee bean. These differences affect not only flavor but also the perception of body and mouth-feel.

No matter which brewing method you select, drink your joe immediately. As hot coffee sits, those lactones break down into acids. The pH of brewed coffee can drop 15 percent in an hour or so, throwing off the acidity-bitterness-body balance so crucial to a good cup of coffee.

3,000 Lynched In Tanzania For 'Witchcraft' In Past Six Years

Over the past six years, more than 3,000 people were lynched in Tanzania by frightened neighbors who thought they were witches, according to a new report from the Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC).

Between 2005 and 2011, Tanzanians lynched an average of 500 people per year on suspicion of witchcraft, with most killings occurring in rural areas in the north of the country, according to the report obtained by Agence France-Presse.

"In Shinyanga province for example 242 people were killed because of local beliefs in witchcraft between January 2010 and January 2011 alone," the Legal and Human Rights Centre said in the report.

The LHRC explained that many victims were older women who had developed red eyes, which has long been considered a sign of witchcraft. Poor women in particular often develop red eyes as a result of burning cow dung for fuel as a substitute for firewood, researchers have found.

"Use of low quality biomass fuels like cow dung cause indoor pollution which is a hazard reflected in eyes turning red," gender consultant Rose Mgema told the InterPress Third World News Agency.

Ignas Mtana, a spokesman for police in northwest Tanzania, told IntrePress that women are often killed within a short period of time following the death of a relative. He said many families visit soothsayers to determine the cause of death and are often told that witchcraft is responsible.

Rural villagers driven by superstition have also murdered a great number of albinos in recent years due to a belief that making potions from their legs, hair, hands and blood can lead to great wealth, the BBC reported in a 2008 investigation.

Reuters reported last year that albino women are sometimes raped due a belief that intercourse with them will cure AIDs, one of many erroneous beliefs that have led to albino killings in recent years.

"(It is believed) a person with albinism is a curse. They are from the devil, they are not human, they do not die, they simply disappear," Peter Ash, founder and director of Under The Same Sun (UTSS), told Reuters at the time.

Emmanuel Uchawi, a member of a Tanzanian organization working to protect the rights of the elderly in local communities, told the BBC that he believes education and development is the key to preventing witchcraft-related murders.

"You cannot separate witchcraft beliefs from the issue of development. The more developed people are, the less they believe in such things," Uchawi said.

Night Shift Might Boost Women's Breast Cancer Risk: Study

MONDAY, May 28 (HealthDay News) -- Women who work the night shift more than twice a week might be increasing their risk for breast cancer, Danish researchers find.

Moreover, the risk appears to be cumulative and highest among women who describe themselves as "morning" people rather than "evening" people, the researchers say.

"About 10 to 20 percent of women in modern societies have night shift work," said lead researcher Johnni Hansen. "It might therefore be one of the largest occupational problems related to cancer."

Right now, the reasons for these findings are uncertain.

"Night shift work involves exposure to light at night, which decreases the production of the night hormone melatonin that seems to protect against certain cancers," said Hansen, of the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology at the Danish Cancer Society, in Copenhagen.

In addition, light at night might introduce circadian disruption, where the master clock in the brain becomes desynchronized from local cellular clocks in different body organs, affecting the breast, he said.

"Repeated phase shifting may lead to defects in the regulation of the circadian cell cycle, thus favoring uncontrolled growth," Hansen said.

Also, sleep deprivation after night shift work leads to the suppression of the immune system, which might increase the growth of cancer cells, he added.

This is not the first time this association has been recognized. In 2007 the International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organization, said that working the night shift is "probably carcinogenic to humans," according to background information in the study.

The new study was published in the May 28 online edition of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

To determine the effect of night shift work on the risk for breast cancer, Hansen's team collected data on more than 18,500 women who worked for the Danish Army between 1964 and 1999.

The researchers identified 210 women who had breast cancer and compared them to almost 900 similar women who did not have breast cancer.

All of the women were asked about their working patterns, lifestyles and other factors such as their use of contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy, and their sunbathing habits.

In addition, women were asked to classify themselves as "morning" or "evening" people.

In all, 141 women with breast cancer responded to the study questionnaires. In addition, 551 women who did not have breast cancer responded.

Among these women, the risk for breast cancer was increased 40 percent if they worked at night, the researchers found.

But for women who worked nights at least three times a week, and for at least six years, the risk was doubled, the findings showed.

Women who worked the night shift but who described themselves as morning people were at even higher risk of breast cancer. They were almost four times more likely to develop breast cancer as those who didn't work nights, according to the researchers.

In comparison, women who considered themselves evening people were twice as likely to develop breast cancer, they added.

Morning-preferring women who did not work at night had a lower overall risk of breast cancer than evening types, Hansen's team found.

"Since night shift work is unavoidable in modern societies, this type of work should be limited in duration and limited to less than three night shifts per week," Hansen said. "In particular, morning types should limit their night work," he added.

While the study found an association between night shift work and breast cancer, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Men who work at night may also be at risk for prostate cancer, Hansen noted. This evidence comes from three small studies, he said.

Dr. Stephanie Bernik, chief of surgical oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, said that "it's very hard to single out the causes of breast cancer and whether women on the night shift have a higher risk."

But there appears to be some truth to this, she added.

"Stress increases the risk of breast cancer and affects the body as a whole, and working at night can throw off your circadian rhythm and cause stress," Bernik said.

"This is another finding that breast cancer is caused by a multitude of different environmental and genetic influences, so this is probably a piece of the puzzle," she added.

An expert on environmental factors that affect cancer, Richard Stevens, from the department of community medicine at the UConn Health Center in Farmington, Conn., said that "the evidence is growing rapidly about light at night and, specifically, shift work and breast cancer."

"But, this is the first study about the morning/evening preference," he noted.

"If it's true that light at night increases the risk of disease, then there are very practical implications," Stevens said.

If lighting is really an issue in night work, it is known which wavelengths suppress melatonin the most, and lighting could be adjusted to eliminate those wavelengths, he explained.

There are other things people can do to avoid the effects of light at night on health, he added.

"For example, for health in general, if you wake up during the night, stay in the dark; don't turn on the light. If you turn on the lights it will start suppressing melatonin immediately," Stevens said.

"There is a lot more involved than melatonin, but it's a good marker if your circadian rhythm is being changed," he said.

Studies are ongoing on the risk of night work and prostate cancer, Stevens noted.

(AP) ? A handwritten sign that said "whites hate blacks" and was carried by one of more than 2,000 protesters in Johannesburg on Tuesday shows that a fierce national debate over a painting depicting the president's genitals is about more than art and the constitution.

Mapule Kgomo, a black woman from the outskirts of Johannesburg who wrote the sign, said she drew her conclusion about fellow South Africans who are white after seeing the painting, titled "The Spear," that a white South African had made of President Jacob Zuma, who is black.

"I hate whites passionately after that painting," she added. "I'm so hurt."

On Tuesday, a spokesman for the Goodman Gallery said it has agreed to remove images of the painting from its website. The painting itself had already been removed from the gallery after it was defaced last week.

But the passionate feelings about the painting don't seem ready to subside. If anything, the protests and comment have been amplified because much of it is taking place on social network sites.

The debate is part of an ongoing discussion in this young democracy about whether white South Africans are insensitive and to what extent black South Africans still feel they are treated as second class citizens, even though the country is governed by Zuma's African National Congress. The ANC led the fight against apartheid before becoming a political party.

Zuma has asked the High Court to rule that his constitutional right to dignity was violated when the gallery put the painting on display earlier this month. The gallery and artist Brett Murray argue they are defending the constitutional right to freedom of expression.

"I am not a racist," Murray said in an affidavit filed in the court case, which is still under way. "I do not produce art with an intention to hurt, humiliate or insult."

Liza Essers, owner of the Goodman Gallery, says she regrets "the divisiveness that the exhibition has caused.

"It was never my intention to cause hurt to any person," Essers said in a statement last week.

The issue is not black and white.

Black artists filed affidavits supporting Murray. And a white man and a black man entered the gallery to deface the painting, saying they were acting independently of each other and wanted to defend Zuma. The two were arrested and face trespassing charges.

Murray said in his court affidavit that the intention of his Zuma painting, part of a show that criticized the ANC, was to express a sense of betrayal that some post-apartheid leaders were greedy or corrupt. He also said that details of Zuma's sex life had become part of the public debate in South Africa.

Zuma, 70, has been married six times ? he currently has four wives, as his Zulu culture allows. He has 21 children, and acknowledged in 2010 that he fathered a child that year with a woman who was not among his wives.

Tuesday's protest wound about a kilometer (half mile) from a usually quiet park in an upscale Johannesburg neighborhood to a corner just south of the gallery. Along the way, black women in maid's aprons and black men in gardener's overalls stood on the balconies of homes in the largely white residential neighborhood to cheer on the marchers.

The gallery had replaced pieces from Murray's show in its windows with signs reading: "The Goodman Gallery respects your right to protest."

ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu addressed the crowd outside the gallery, saying, "We refuse to be painted as inferior citizens of this country."

South African Communist Party leader Blade Nzimande, a Zuma ally, compared the case to a hate speech suit a group that lobbies for white South Africans brought against an ANC leader who had insisted on continuing to sing a song from the apartheid era that calls for killing whites. The judge in that case banned the song.

Nzimande said some have asked why Zuma supporters went to court, as the white group did, instead of trying to speak to the artist and the gallery to find a solution.

"You can't have a dialogue with a person who is actually insulting you," Nzimande said.

Kgomo, the protester, said that despite the division vividly on display Tuesday, a resolution was possible.

"If they apologize to our president, then it will be enough for us," she said.

Just after all, their experience is in true estate they usually may perhaps not be very tech savvy. Within the contrary, there are actually on line real estate solutions that make email advertising and marketing a cakewalk for virtually any individual.

When in search of an online email marketing provider, decide on one that could help you produce e-mails, handle your speak to lists, and acquire tracking studies. Essentially, you should be able to ship your 1st email advertising and marketing piece in less than an hour. The very best services have ?wizards? that permit you to, for example, put together e-mail newsletters utilizing a Web interface and on just one display. Templates and click-and-drag functionality enable you to readily arrange text, publish photos, and instantaneously see what your recipients will see once they obtain your email.

Once you?ve sent your email messages or newsletters, the services need to enable you to trace the outcomes, telling you ways lots of e-mails you sent, how numerous bounced again, how quite a few people today opened the email, how lots of clicked within the back links, and how several forwarded it on to other folks.

Mission Africa ? 3000 Miles in an Electric Car: or, Xavier Chevrin Is Manlier Than You

?
A depressingly high percentage of new car buyers don?t even want to hear about the potential benefits of an electric car. ?It doesn?t go far enough per charge,? they complain, or ?But where am I going to plug in it? My garage is full of stuff and there?s no plug on the street!? In a single fell swoop (okay, it?s a six-week trip) titled ?Mission Africa,? Frenchman Xavier Chevrin is setting out to prove that it is possible to drive an all-electric vehicle 3,000 miles through Africa, on bumpy (or even non-existent) roads.

I am particularly excited about the very special ROFGO Gulf collection and the line-up of unique shooting brakes. The only place on earth you will see such a gathering of automotive rarities is Salon Priv? at Syon Park in September ? and I for one wouldn?t miss it for the world.?

2012 will be the seventh consecutive Salon Priv? and will boast a range of new features and exhibits, with more supercar and premium brands than ever before.

BRITISH PREMI?RES
18 of the world?s 22 ROFGO Gulf collection race cars will be exhibited together in one place for the first time
Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera Disco Volante ? 60 years? celebration with models from the 1950s and 2012 seen together for the first time
Disco Volante 2012 ? only seen once before at the Geneva International Motor Show in March this year ? makes its British debut at Salon Priv? 2012
Ferrari F40 ? 25 years celebration ? a stunning collection of F40 models will lead the Concours
Mercedes-Benz Gullwing ? 60 years? celebration ? stunning exhibits from the 1950s and the fantastic new SLS

NEW COLLECTIONS
Expected to steal the limelight at this year?s event is the very special ROFGO Gulf Collection.

Salon Priv? is delighted to be able to unearth this rare collection of Gulf cars from Adrian Hamilton?s country house and bring them to Syon Park on full public view together for the very first time.

These cars, instantly recognisable from their iconic sky blue and orange livery, stretch right back from 1967 (the 1967 Mirage was the first Gulf-liveried car to run at Le Mans) to the present day (the 2010 Lamborghini Gallardo competed in the GT2 Championship).

In a year when Her Majesty The Queen celebrates the 60-year Diamond Jubilee, the Mercedes-Benz Gullwing is also celebrating its own 60th anniversary in the public eye and will be on display in all its glory at Syon Park this September.

Named because of its unusual ?Gullwing? upwards lifting doors, the car was initially conceived as a purpose-built racing sports car and went on to achieve immediate iconic status ? as evidenced by 2011?s equally striking tribute SLS, also exhibited at Salon Priv? in 2012.

There will also be a special exhibit dedicated to memorable cars from the movies, including some rare DeLorean examples and a number of vehicles from the Bond franchise of 007 films over the years.

As always there will be some exquisite collectors? models from overseas, including a number of unique one-offs such as:

Lamborghini Flying Star (1961 Turin Motor Show car)
Aston Martin DB4 Bertone Jet
1912 Type 16 number 471, the oldest competition Bugatti and the personal racing car of Ettore Bugatti
Ferrari 330 GT Vignale shooting brake, exhibited by its owner ?Jamiroquai front-man, Jay Kay
Luxury motorbikes will take their rightful place on the Salon Priv? lawn, led by some beautiful custom Harley Davidson models direct from Milwaukee, from 1912 to 2012.

CONCOURS CLASSES
In a year of anniversaries, it is also the 25th birthday of the iconic Ferrari F40 ? a collection of which will lead the way at this year?s Concours d?El?gance.

The memorable Italian supercar, which was produced from 1987 to 1992, will be one of the jewels in Salon Priv??s crown this year. A mid-engine, rear-wheel drive, two door coup?, the F40 was the fastest, most powerful and most expensive car that Ferrari sold to the public. Only 1,315 F40s were manufactured in total, several of which will form a central part of this year?s Concours.

NEW FEATURES & EXHIBITS ? HIGHLIGHTSAlongside the event?s impressive portfolio of partners will be a number of new brands representing sectors such as yachts and yacht brokers, luxury marble, accessories, fashion, furniture and audio-visual equipment.

New for 2012 will be a special ?Aviation Lawn?, which will provide the event?s high net worth guest list with a greater insight into the ownership and charter options that exist within the private aviation industry.

The inaugural Art and Memorabilia Fayre will also take place on the Concours Lawn, supported by the Zurich-based private bank, EFG International and featuring a fabulous collection of automotive paintings, prints and photographs from yesteryear and the current day. This artwork will feature some of the most iconic racing liveries ever seen.

In keeping with this year?s somewhat Italian theme, three dazzling Touring Superleggera Disco Volante will arrive on Syon Park?s lawns for the first time, fresh from a recent debut at the Geneva International Motor Show for the 2012 model.

This modern flying saucer is built on the bones of the Alpha Romeo 8C Competizione and boasts 443 horsepower from the rear wheels of the car.

The Touring Superleggera is set to turn a few heads at Syon Park in September.

Also representing iconic Italian design will be a special Concours d?El?gance class dedicated to the Bugatti vintage competition series ? perhaps the most valuable gathering of automotive royalty to grace the Salon Priv? lawn in the event?s history.

Debt-Hit Greece 'Running Out Of Medication'

Jason Farrell, Sky News correspondent, in Athens

Many pharmacies now have huge debts to pharmaceutical companies for drugs they have handed out free of charge.

Sky News spoke to one pharmacist who has not been paid by the state for over a year.

Evaggelina Rousi, who runs a chemist in Athens, said: "The government owes us 30,000 euros but we have not been paid by them for a year and a half.?

An open hand showing cold and flu medicine

Many people who rely on regular medication are at risk

"How can we survive like this? We can't take it anymore."

The shop has stopped re-stocking its shelves and now only orders new drugs once a customer comes in with a prescription.

Dimitris Karageoregiou, secretary general of the Panhellenic Pharmaceutical Association, told Sky News: "This is an awful situation. Greece is running out of medication... Soon people will start dying because of a lack of medication."

The Catsoula family, who live in the suburbs of Athens, are at breaking point. The two sisters and their elderly grandparents need various forms of medicine. Seventy-year-old Heleni Catsoula uses oxygen to help her with respiratory problems.

But she told Sky News: "The government reimburses me for the 100 euros I pay for the oxygen, but now they have stopped. They also used to pay the chemists for my drugs but they have stopped.

"Now I owe my local chemists 400 euros and I find it difficult to get my medication. If I have an attack, I don't even have petrol in the tank to get to the hospital. And nor can I afford the five euro entry fee."

The five euro hospital entry fee was a recent austerity measure introduced by the last government.

The family, who live in the industrial area of Aspropirgos, has sold all their jewellery including wedding rings and christening gifts to pay for food and medication.

Ms Catsoula's daughter Vicki, who is diabetic herself, now regularly makes a three-hour journey to a central Athens refuge centre to try to get hold of the drugs her family needs.

For the Catsoulas, austerity has meant the state no longer provides them with the support they need.

Their home sits in the shadow of the Aspropirgos power station and yet they cannot afford to service their electricity bills. One of the sisters lost her job at the factory three years ago.

A sign outside their home asks the energy company to be compassionate and not cut them off.

If everyone used the 4-Way Test the world would be in perfect harmony. Everyone would tell the truth and never tell a lie. Everyone would be fair and share. People could work out their problems like what they should do first and last when two people want to do something different. Everybody would be nice and not fight. More people would be friends, not enemies. It would be beneficial because people would be nice and trustworthy. People would be all the previous.

People would help people in need and help people with work. We would have more schools, better schools, better colleges, and better jobs. Also the black wouldn?t fight the white and the white wouldn?t fight the black. There wouldn?t be war. Many deaths wouldn?t have happened. There would be many deaths avoided. (AP) ? Even though Adam Jones isn't from Baltimore, he's making sure it'll be home for a while longer.

Jones signed a six-year, $85.5 million contract with the Orioles on Sunday, ensuring that the 26-year-old center fielder will be with the team through 2018.

"I fit here in this city. I fit here on this team. I fit in Camden Yards. I don't see myself wearing another white uniform that doesn't have Orioles across the chest," said Jones, a native of San Diego.

"I'm not from Baltimore. This is now my town."

A fan favorite, Jones entered Sunday with a 17-game hitting streak and leads the team in home runs and RBIs.

Vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette began negotiating a new deal with the 2009 All-Star weeks ago.

Jones' new deal includes a $2 million signing bonus, $8.5 million in 2013, $13 million each in 2014 and 2015, $16 million apiece in 2016 and 2017 and $17 million in 2018. It also includes a no-trade provision.

"The dude rang the cash register every time he hit a home run," Duquette said.

After the Orioles and Jones agreed on a one-year, $6.15 million contract in February, avoiding arbitration, they began exploring an extension.

"We started the process in spring training, and picked up some steam in the last couple of weeks," Duquette said.

Jones has been active in community affairs, something that Duquette referred to several times during Sunday's announcement.

"To have a great team in Baltimore, you have to find and keep players like Adam," Duquette said.

The news conference was attended by a local youth baseball team that Jones sponsors.

"A lot of these kids look up to me, and I am a role model," Jones said.

Jones had one more year before he could have been a free agent, and he acknowledged he decided he wanted to stay in Baltimore some time ago.

"Now, I don't have to worry about trade deadline, free agency," Jones said. "I don't have to worry about any of that, just worry about being a part of the best team in baseball."

The Orioles have suffered through 14 straight losing seasons, and since Jones came to Baltimore in a trade from Seattle in 2008, the team hasn't won even 70 games. Entering Sunday's game with Kansas City, the Orioles lead the AL East with a 29-18 record.

"We have to prove to the fans that we're for real. We're slowing doing it. This is a big step in that right direction," Jones said.

"There's a bigger goal here, I believe, and that's winning games."
