Michael Douglas' battle with stage IV throat cancer played out publicly at the end of 2010 and into 2011. The actor wasn't shy about discussing his diagnosis and then treatment and recovery. But in an interview with Matt Lauer on TODAY in January, Douglas said some of his story -- specifically the story painted by portraits snapped by paparazzi -- had been documented without his permission, and he resented that. New photos in Star magazine won't help.
Douglas is seen on the cover of the magazine and in photos inside smoking while traveling with?his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones on a yacht to Porto Venere, Italy, on July 21.
The 66-year-old Hollywood icon?was a longtime smoker before his cancer battle.
Perhaps getting caught is more troubling for Douglas than the post-cancer puff. From that January interview on TODAY: "With the amount of paparazzi that they have and these video cameras, you know, you just can't do anything ... There was sort of a macabre enjoyment out of sort of watching me go down there for a while, I felt, by the paparazzi."

What are NMSCs??
Non-melanoma skin cancers are the most common skin cancers. They arise from skin cells in the epidermis, the outer-most layer of the skin. The two most common NMSCs are basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). BCC is the most common human cancer and accounts for 80% of all skin cancers. SCCs make up 16% of all skin cancers.
Who gets NMSCs??NMSCs are most common on skin that has been exposed to a lot of ultraviolet (UV) radiation over time, either from natural sunlight or from tanning booths or phototherapy. There may be many years, or decades, between the time of significant UV exposure and the development of NMSCS. NMSCs are more commonly seen in individuals with fair skin, since they are more susceptible to UV-induced skin damage, however NMSCs can occur in people of all skin types and ethnic backgrounds. People with inherited genetic disorders, immune suppression, or who have been exposed to ionizing radiation may also be at higher risk for developing NMSCs.

Google: A Legal Victory and a Local Push Back : Beyond Search
The frenzy over Google+ seems to be ebbing. Google+ is important, but until the business version becomes widely available and I can search for content, I am keeping my enthusiasm in check. There is some interesting Google news, and it is of the sort of good and maybe bad branch of the digital information tree.
On the good news side, I learned in ?One Small Antitrust Victory for Google? that Google successfully worked though a legal matter involving TradeComet. The issue concerned antitrust. Google faces a number of other legal challenges, but the longest journey begins with a single step.
On the maybe bad news side I read ?Google May Be Outgrowing Their [sic] Home in Mountain View.? Pronoun agreement aside, I found the news item provocative. California cities are strapped for revenue. One would assume that Mountain View would be thrilled to have the Google pump more tax into the city. Not so. According to the the write up:
City council member Laura Macias told the Wall Street Journal ?we may not develop as much as Google wants.?? Mountain View is a region that has lots of greener, wildlife and is not city-like. Google is interested in building bridges, recreation facilities, corporate housing and more offices. This will result in high density populations and lead to a different culture and life-style in the region, Several city council members in Mountain View are not happy about it.
Well, there is Belmont, a wonderful city not far from Mountain View. Perhaps Google?s approach will woo the legal eagles who are involved in Scott?s Valley?
What is quite clear is that what may be small issues for some companies can balloon into supersized challenges for what is one of the success stories of Silicon Valley.
Google?s hotel search service comes not a minute to soon. Perhaps the shift of innovation into product groups will pay dividends for the search and advertising giant which, for now, calls Mountain View home?

1. Drunken driving, traffic crime deportations way up
The Obama administration was able to set a record number of deportations due to huge increases in deportations of people arrested for breaking minor traffic or immigration laws. According to Suzanne Gamboa of the Associated Press, 27,635 people had been deported for drunk driving violations, double those deported under the Bush administration. These numbers have cast doubt on the Obama administration?s claims that it is focusing on the most dangerous criminals.
2. Companies face federal fines for allegedly employing illegal immigrants
In Massachusetts, eight companies suspected of hiring illegal workers were slapped with steep fines, according to WBUR?s Bianca V?zquez Toness. Embracing a new strategy for finding illegal immigrants, ICE audited Form I-9 documents of companies, rather than employing an immigration raid. Among the employers, a commercial cleaning service in Allston was given a $100,000 fine.
3. Arizona launches website for donations to build fence along US border with Mexico
Arizona state lawmakers launched a fundraising website to build a fence along the US-Mexico border, according to Paul Davenport of the Associated Press. Among the Arizona officials backing the website is Maricopa county Sheriff Joe Arpaio. The website received more than $39,000 of funding within its first 17 hours.
4. Blueberry grower fined by US Immigration
According to Chris Facchini of WLBZ in Bangor, Maine, ICE fined a blueberry grower from Milbridge, Maine, in excess of $100,000 for hiring illegal immigrants. The fine is the highest of any company in the New England region. An ICE agent says that between January 2006 and January 2008 the blueberry grower employed an estimated 200 illegal workers.
5. Suspected immigrant boat found on Ventura shore
A small fishing boat was abandoned in Ventura County, California, raising suspicions that illegal immigrants on the boat are now in the US, according to the Associated Press. Authorities found 15 life jackets and 8 large fuel containers aboard the Mexican boat, along with footprints in the sand.

Former Mozambique rebel group to build barracks (AFP)
MAPUTO (AFP) ? Mozambique's official opposition party, the former rebel group Renamo, will build barracks for its demobilised soldiers to "defend democracy", its spokesman said Thursday.
"The provinces have asked the (Renamo) president to create their own barracks to defend democracy," Renamo spokesman Fernando Mazanga told AFP.
He said the first barracks will be built in the northern provinces of Cabo Delgado and Niassa, and in the central provinces of Sofala and Zambezia, one-time Renamo strongholds.
Mazanga said the barracks were needed to protect ordinary Mozambicans, after deadly riots in September last year left 14 dead when police fired live rounds during protests over rising food prices.
"If the government sends agents to attack people, Renamo will defend them," he said.
Renamo accuses ruling party Frelimo of violating the 1992 Rome Peace Accord that ended the southern African country's 16-year civil war, which killed some five million people and displaced millions more.
Under the agreement, a new national defence force was meant to include 15,000 soldiers from each group and divide command posts evenly, but only 5,000 Renamo fighters were incorporated, Mazanga claimed.
He accused President Armando Guebuza's administration of selectively rooting out Renamo soldiers since the leader came to power in 2005.
"From the start of Guebuza's governance Renamo-allied commanders of the national armed forces were dismissed and Renamo-allied soldiers were forcefully demobilised," he said.
Mozambique's military press office denied any forced demobilisations had occurred.
Renamo enjoyed strong support in some areas immediately after the war, but its support has since dwindled.
It claimed just 17.7 percent of the vote at the last elections in 2009, down from 37.7 percent at the first democratic polls in 1994.
Afonso Dhlakama, the party's leader since 1980, claimed 16.4 percent in the presidential race, losing out to Guebuza's 75 percent.

Mining for 2011 Fantasy Football Hidden Gems: Danario Alexander ...
Sam Bradford burst onto the scene as the 2010 first overall draft selection, and the Rams got all that could have hoped for from their rookie signal caller.??The preseason foreshadowed what was to come quite accurately for the receiving corps as?Bradford lost his expected primary target Donnie Avery for the year to a torn ACL, only to have that followed up by losing emerging go-to-guy Mark Clayton in week five with a torn patella tendon.? Ultimately the Rams trotted out many wide receivers with the hopes of someone emerging as a game changer.? The results were that Danny Amendola lead the team with 85 catches?on just a paltry 8.1 yards per catch, and a host of others did little to distinguish themselves.? The lone exception was Danario Alexander who had over 90 yards receiving in two of the six games he played in while picking up 15.3 yards per catch.
At 6?5 and 215 pounds Alexander was not an easy man to bring down with 6.0 yards-after-catch (YAC).? The biggest problem with Alexander, which manifested itself last season, is a propensity for injury.? The recipient of surgery on his left knee four times, he is a risk to go down at any time.?? His production has never been a problem though.? Overshadowed when healthy his first three seasons?by talented teammates in the vaunted Missouri spread that included Jeremy Maclin, Chase Coffman and Martin Rucker,? he truly broke out his senior year with 113 receptions for 1781 yards and 14 touchdowns.? He managed to go undrafted, largely because of concerns about his knee. He was signed to the Rams practice squad before the season and summoned in October after the injury to Clayton.
Competition should be plentiful for touches this season with the Rams showing some WAC love?drafting Austin Pettis out of Boise State in the third round and Greg Salas out of Hawaii in the fourth round.? In addition to them,? Avery is reportedly doing well rehabbing, 2010 fourth round selection Mardy Gilyard is still in the fold, leading receiver Danny Amendola has gone nowhere and Brandon Gibson is still on the roster as well.? Of that bunch, none are locks to cement the number one receiver spot.? Both rookies will have to learn on the fly in a shortened offseason, Avery is returning from injury and was good but not great previously anyways (part of that being the result of bad quarterback play), Gilyard caught a whopping 6 passes last year, Amendola is best used in the slot and on special teams and Gibson is, well, mediocre on his best days.? In short, there is an opportunity to be had for Alexander if he?s able to keep his legs under him.??He possesses?the highest upside of the bunch thanks to his large frame and solid speed, and should at least be a matchup nightmare in the redzone.? His average draft position according to Mock Draft Central is approximately 185 for drafts held between July 11 and July 25.? If things break perfectly, he offers back end?number two fantasy wide receiver upside at the cost of a number five wide receiver, making him an appealing late round or cheap auction value.

Inside the Mind of Norway's Accused Mass Murderer: Why Anders Behring Loves Israel (Time.com)
There was a time when a blond, blue-eyed nationalist looking to violently rid Europe of its "alien" immigrant population could be reliably assumed to hate Jews. It's no longer quite that simple.
Anders Behring Breivik insists, in his rambling 1,500-page manifesto released on the day of his confessed rampage that killed 76 Norwegians, that he's no Nazi, despite expressing some sympathy for what Hitler had been trying to achieve. Instead he styles himself a latter-day warrior of the Knights Templar, vanguard force of the medieaval Christian Crusades that briefly claimed the Holy Land for Christendom and made Jerusalem's streets run ankle deep with the blood of those they saw as usurpers. Even then, it's worth remembering that the blood spilled by the Crusaders was both Muslim and Jewish. (See pictures of the tragedy in Norway.)
Despite the Crusader lineage to which he aspires, however, Breivik has no intention of driving Jews from Europe, much less from the Holy Land. On the contrary, his manifesto hails Zionist Jews as a crucial ally in his battle between Christendom and Islam, proclaiming Israel as the frontline citadel in that war. Breivik's Crusade would have Jews on board for an existential fight against Islam; the mirror image of the "Crusader-Jewish" alliance that Osama bin Laden vowed to drive out of what he defined as Muslim lands.
In his rambling history drawn from a range of Islamophobic sources, Breivik paints a picture of Christians and Jews (and also Hindus) as fellow sufferers under Muslim oppression through the ages. He soft-pedals around the uncomfortable fact of Crusaders killing Jews, insisting that in the limited instances where such events occurred, they were the work of renegade bad apples. Nor does he evade Hitler's Holocaust; he simply says the Fuhrer was wrong about the Jews:
"Were the majority of the German and European Jews disloyal? Yes, at least the so called liberal Jews, similar to the liberal Jews today that opposes nationalism/Zionism and supports multiculturalism. Jews that support multiculturalism today are as much of athreat to Israel and Zionism (Israeli nationalism) as they are to us. Instead of trying to exterminate Europe's Jews, Breivik suggests Hitler ought to have enforced Zionism: "He could have easily worked out an agreement with the UK and France to liberate the ancient Jewish Christian lands with the purpose of giving the Jews back their ancestral lands," Breivik writes. "The UK and France would perhaps even contribute to such a campaign in an effort to support European reconciliation. The deportation of the Jews from Germany wouldn't be popular but eventually, the Jewish people would regard Hitler as a hero because he returned the Holy land to them." Clearly, though, Breivik confines his philo-Semitism to Zionists, who he sees as fellow conservative nationalists in the war against Islam. As for the rest, adherents of multiculturalism, their fate should be the same as any other "traitors" to his Judeo-Christian Crusade.
"Never target a jew because he is a Jew," Breivik writes, "but rather because he is a ... traitor."
So Breivik doesn't hate all Jews. But he certainly hates most of us:
"So, are the current Jews in Europe and US disloyal? The multiculturalist (nation-wrecking) Jews ARE while the conservative Jews ARE NOT. Aprox. 75% of European/US Jews support multiculturalism while aprox. 50% of Israeli Jews does the same. This shows very clearly that we must embrace the remaining loyal Jews as brothers rather than repeating the mistake of the [Nazis]." Some of Israel's more liberal supporters branded Breivik's enthusiasm for Zionism a sham, and scoffed at his professed friendship. And they may have a point, at least in respect of the movement Breivik is trying to build. In a revealing passage, he warns that those still prone to anti-Semitic and Nazi ideologies should do their best to conceal their swastika tattoos:
"DO NOT make this war about race or ethnicity. You have to keep in mind that most people in Western Europe have been systematically indoctrinated for the last 4-5 decades... Many people would rather commit suicide or live under slavery/harsh dhimmitude [the status he says non-Muslims will hold under Islamic rule] than to become a Nazi or fight for the Nazi cause... Demonising Nazism has through 6 decades of indoctrination ... developed into an unconscious established truth. As such, and due to the actual negative and evil aspects of this ideology, it is pointless to try to resurrect it in any way or form... In order to connect with the ordinary man you must understand that he is a modern man who has travelled a several decade long journey through multiculturalist institutions. He is completely brainwashed so tread carefully and take the required precautions... The fear of Islamisation is themost pressing concern for most Europeans and Islam is NOT a race. So avoid talking about race. It is a cultural war, not a race war! If you do believe it is a race war, then keep it to yourself as it is un-doubtfully counterproductive to flag those views."
Of course, many right-wing Jews, while abhorring the terrorist violence used by the Breivik, nonetheless share his aversion to Islam and to multiculturalism. In his manifesto, Breivik expresses support for Pamela Geller, a leading voice of last year's movement to stop the construction of a mosque near the World Trade Center site in Manhattan. Geller has made common cause against Islam with such far-right European groups as the English Defense League and Dutch anti-immigration champion Geert Wilders - groups also admired by Breivik.
And some Zionist conservatives, while unreservedly condemning Breivik's action, were also concerned to prevent it from obscuring an underlying message they support. The Jerusalem Post, a mainstream pro-government Israeli daily, wrote in an editorial, "the fact that this terrible tragedy was perpetrated by a right-wing extremist [should not] detract attention from the underlying problems faced not only by Norway, but by many Western European nations... While there is absolutely no justification for the sort of heinous act perpetrated this weekend in Norway, discontent with multiculturalism's failure must not be delegitimatized or mistakenly portrayed as an opinion held by only the most extremist elements of the Right."
On the contrary, Islamophobic and xenophobic attitudes to immigration have moved from being the exclusive preserve of the extremist right to being increasingly common in the mainstream right, which is why Breivik's actions pose a challenge.
Still, Breivik seems to acknowledge that his struggle against multiculturalism, whether among Jews or in the West more generally, is unlikely to be won through persuasion. His manifesto calls for violence precisely because he can't see anti-immigrant nationalist parties prevailing through the ballot box - "the democratical (sic) struggle through dialogue has been lost."
The very reason that the majority of American Jews embrace multiculturalism, of course, is because they are its beneficiaries. Only the victory of American multiculturalism over American anti-Semitism made the United States safe for Jews. And, as Breivik himself tacitly admits, the reason there's a taboo in the European mainstream on advocating open hostility to immigrants is precisely because the Holocaust taught the continent a brutal lesson in the horrific consequences that can flow from demonizing the "other". Similarly, the revulsion prompted by Breivik's acts of terrorism is hardly likely to rally Western citizenry behind his Crusade - any more successfully than Bin Laden's terrorism managed to rally the Muslim world to war against the West. Breivik and Bin Laden may seem like polar opposites, but in the end they're reading off the same "clash of cultures" script. It's a script in which, Breivik acknowledges, the majority of Jews - and of Europeans - want no part.

NKorean official to go to US for nuclear talks (AP)
BALI, Indonesia ? A senior North Korean official will visit the United States this week to discuss the possible resumption of long-stalled international negotiations on ending Pyongyang's nuclear programs, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Sunday.
The news that diplomats could be close to reviving six-nation disarmament talks that broke off in 2008 comes after more than a year of animosity and high tension between the rival Koreas and raises hopes in a region on edge. Two attacks Seoul blames on Pyongyang last year killed 50 South Koreans and led to threats of war.
Clinton's invitation for North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan to visit New York follows a crucial meeting Friday between nuclear negotiators from North and South Korea on the sidelines of a regional forum of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, in Bali. It was the first such meeting since disarmament talks collapsed in 2008, and the envoys agreed to work toward the resumption of six-nation negotiations.
The recent diplomacy comes after more than a year of hardline unity by Washington and Seoul since international investigators said a North Korean torpedo sank a South Korean warship in March of last year, killing 46 sailors. The South demanded the North show regret for the warship sinking and an artillery attack on a front-line South Korean island that killed four in November.
North Korea denies a role in the sinking and says South Korea provoked the island shelling. While refusing to apologize, however, Pyongyang has repeatedly shown a willingness to return to the disarmament talks. The North is seen as needing a diplomatic breakthrough and outside food aid ahead of the 2012 centennial of the birth of the country's founder, Kim Il Sung.
"We are open to talks with North Korea, but we do not intend to reward the North just for returning to the table," Clinton said in a statement announcing Kim Kye Gwan's trip to the U.S. "We will not give them anything new for actions they have already agreed to take. And we have no appetite for pursuing protracted negotiations that will only lead us right back to where we have already been."
The wariness is in line with past U.S. statements that ally Seoul must be satisfied with the North's sincerity before Washington will act.
During Kim's trip, he will meet with a team of U.S. officials to explore his country's commitment to returning to the international talks and taking concrete steps toward disarmament, Clinton said in the statement.
It was unclear what days Kim, the North's former chief nuclear envoy, will visit New York. The announcement follows an earlier meeting between Clinton and the foreign ministers of South Korea and Japan in Bali.
The nuclear negotiations involve the two Koreas, the U.S., China, Japan and Russia.
North Korean Foreign Minister Pak Ui Chun said in comments released Sunday by the country's state media that the Korean peninsula now stands "on the crossroads of detente and the vicious cycle of escalating tension."
The countries involved, Pak said, must "make the best use of (the) opportunity of dialogue and make a bold decision to settle the fundamental issue."
Diplomats have been eager for the two rivals to ease tensions.
Since the last round of talks, North Korea has conducted a second nuclear test and revealed a uranium enrichment facility that could give it another way to make atomic bombs.
Recent North Korean threats against Seoul's conservative government include a pledge to retaliate over South Korean soldiers' use of pictures of the ruling North Korean family for target practice.
The two Koreas remain in a technical state of war because their three-year conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty, in 1953. The United States has 28,500 troops in the South. That presence is cited by the North as a main factor behind its need to build a nuclear program.

APNewsBreak: Skull discovered at Pearl Harbor (AP)
HONOLULU ? An excavation crew recently made a startling discovery at the bottom of Pearl Harbor when it unearthed a skull that archeologists suspect is from a Japanese pilot who died in the historic attack on Dec. 7, 1941.
Archaeologist Jeff Fong of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Pacific described the discovery to The Associated Press and the efforts under way to identify the skull. He said the early analysis has made him "75 percent sure" that the skull belongs to a Japanese pilot.
He did not provide specifics about what archaeologists have learned about the skull, but said it was not from one of Hawaii's ancient burial sites. They also contacted local police and ruled out the possibility that it's from an active missing person case, said Denise Emsley, public affairs officer for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Hawaii, which was being inundated with media calls Wednesday about the skull from international news organizations.
The items found with the skull, which was determined not to be from a Native Hawaiian, provided some clues: forks, scraps of metal and a Coca-Cola bottle Fong said researchers have determined was from the 1940s.
Fifty-five Japanese airmen were killed and 29 of their aircraft were shot down in the attack, compared with the 2,400 U.S. service members who died. No Japanese remains have been found at Pearl Harbor since World War II.
Pearl Harbor is home to the USS Arizona Memorial, which sits on top of the battleship that sank during the attack. It still holds the bodies of more than 900 men.
The skull remains intact despite being dug up with giant cranes and shovels.
It was April 1 when items plucked from the water during the overnight dredging were laid to dry. When it was determined a skull was among the dredged items, contractors were ordered to stop the work, Emsley said. "We definitely wanted it to be handled correctly," she said.
"That's why it's been kept quiet. We didn't want to excite people prematurely," she said.
The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command on Oahu, charged with identifying Americans who were killed in action but were never brought home, has been asked to determine who the skull belongs to. The cranium was turned over to the command's lab for tests that will include examining dental records and DNA, said John Byrd, the lab's director and a forensic anthropologist.
"We're working on the case but the case is just in the early stages of analysis," he said. "We're not going to know much more about it for a while yet."
The lab is the only accredited Skeletal Identification Laboratory in the United States. JPAC has identified more than 560 Americans since the command was activated in 2003. When more information is gleaned from the skull, other agencies could get involved including the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the Japanese Consulate.
"At this point it's just a hypothesis, it's not a conclusion," Byrd said. "It might be very interesting or it could be very mundane."
It's rare to find remains in Hawaii, said Kohei Niitsu, an official at Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in Tokyo. "The government usually sends a team to determine if the remains are indeed Japanese, and if this is confirmed, they are brought back to Japan," Niitsu said.
NAVFAC Pacific issued a statement late Wednesday saying it was too early to identify the remains.
"Until we receive the final report of the forensic analysis being conducted by scientists at (JPAC), we won't know with certainty whether the remains are a Japanese pilot or not," the statement said.
Daniel Martinez, the National Park Service's chief historian for Pearl Harbor, said experts on Pearl Harbor know enough about the specific location where Japanese planes went down in the attack that they might be able to match the skull with a crewmember.
"They landed in a variety places throughout Pearl Harbor and the island of Oahu," Martinez said. "In the area of Pearl Harbor, we know what plane was shot down and who was in the crew."
Martinez said that beyond the historical significance of the finding, it is a reminder of a life lost.
"I think that anytime you're able to reclaim a casualty and perhaps even identify it, regardless of what country, it may bring closure to a family," he said.
Returning remains to a family in Japan will also have religious significance.
"In terms of Japanese religious belief and practice, it's very important to recover the physical remains," said George Tanabe, a University of Hawaii at Manoa professor emeritus of Japanese religion. "The dead are still thought of as having some sort of afterlife. They still need to be fed. If you don't feed the souls of the dead, they will become hungry ghosts."
